I am running Macmame on my Ibook G3 500. It is very slow under OSX so i am using OS9. The Problem i had was with the X- arcade controller under os9 only.
When I was using the joy stick and hit a fire button the joystick would stop working for a second then start again. This only happens on Player one . Player 2 work.
The fix: I was able to find a ps2 keyboard ( they are hard to find now a days ) I reprogramed the controller on setting 4 to other keys. once I did that it worked on my os9 computer and this problem was gone on setting 4. It still had the problem on setting 1.
It now all works very well and I am having a lot of fun playing all my old games again.
Note: I was not able to program the controller under when it was plugged into my ibook running OS9 but was able to when I plugged it in to my Macbook Pro under osx. I do not know if it was the OS or the computer.
If anyone is looking to program the controller you can tell it will work if the PS2 keyboard works when you have the controller plugged into the mac. To check this open text edit and hit some keys on the keyboard
