Stella 1.4.1 - the Atari 2600 emulator - has been released. This has several improvements and bug fixes over 1.4.

If you missed 1.4 (released in July), it was a major re-write of the app, with significant improvements, including a change in the codebase that will allow all versions (including OS X) to be updated simultaneously, and tons of other good stuff. Check that sucker out!

Just one more reason for me to upgrade to OS X.

Awesome! Does this version support the Stelladaptor?

I had recently updated from Stella 1.2 to 1.4, and was at first disappointed at the fact that it didn't seem to work with any of the cartridge files in my collection.

I later remembered that I had previously allowed Richard B.'s ROM Organizer (A must have utility, BTW) to compress the files.

While Stella 1.2 was able to make use of compressed cartridge files, 1.4 / 1.4.1 is not.

Bottom line, once the cartridge files were uncompressed, saying everything worked is a bit of an understatement...

1.4.1 is a major improvement over 1.2, and is well worth a look.

It's supposed to support the Stelladaptor, but I haven't tried it yet. I suppose I should. (Yet another reason for me to get a new Mac.)

The only quibble I have with it so far is it tends to freeze sometimes. I haven't been able to make it happen consistently, and under OS X it's not the annoyance it would be under 9.

If you go to the main Stella page, and click on Stella News, you'll see the list of changes over the last two versions. The only games that are still wonky (that I've found) are Kool-Aid Man and GI Joe. But I don't think they run properly under any emulator.

I also haven't figured out yet how to reassign keys. But I haven't read all of the docs yet, either. wink

Reassigning keys in Stella is surprisingly MAME like...

While in a game, hit "Tab"

Select "Event Remapping" with the Up/Down Arrow keys, and hit "Return"

Select the event (key) to remap, hit "Return", and then the key you wish to use for the event ("Escape" to clear your entry)

Hit "Return" again to save your change, and "Tab" to return to the game

Well, after hauling my Stelladaptor and a few controls into work, I can't say I'm terribly thrilled with the results.

Having the Stelladaptor plugged in caused Stella 1.4.1 to slow to a crawl, and eventually caused my Mac to freeze. Solid. No force-quitting out of that one. :annoyed:

Weirder still, if I moved the mouse while the Stelladaptor was plugged in, it would cause Stella to pause every time.

I'm guessing that USB Overdrive might be the cause. I suppose I should just uninstall it and see. It hasn't caused me problems (that I know of) before, however.

Another note - I can't get the keypad support to work in Stella, either. It's "supposed to", but none of the games (or test carts) that support it recognize any key presses. (This is just using the Mac keyboard - not the Stelladaptor.)

Anyone have any better luck?

Edit: Okay, well I uninstalled USB Overdrive and Kensington Mouseworks (forgot that was in there  ) and now the Stelladaptor mostly works, and Stella is running fine again.

I say mostly, since the paddles won't sit still. At all. Even if you leave them completely alone, the Mac cursor will jitter like it's had too much coffee to drink, even without Stella running. So it's some sort of Stelladaptor thing. Or an OS X thing.

It looks like this. And if the paddles are plugged in, it won't let you use the mouse, either. Anywhere. Only the paddles will control the cursor. Of course, this makes not only the Mac kind of useless, but also makes paddle games unplayable.

On the plus side, the joystick and driving controller work really well.

(I realize this isn't the proper forum for Stelladaptor gripes... but since PongHit asked, I thought I'd mention it here, too.)

Thanks for the link Nathan. The full screen mode is awesome.

Is there a way to adjust the brightnes? (I tried the different palette setting) All the games look very dark on my setup...

Just a thought...

I've found that Stella 1.4x worked better for me once I removed the old stella prefs, and allowed the new Stella to create a new pref file

It couldn't hurt...
