I kind of see what you mean.

Here is the original triangle channel:

The original is poppy because the triangle wave doesn't always start where it ought to. It should always start right at zero, but often times it starts higher or lower than this producing a pop sound.

The filter I passed it through makes this pop more pronounced. While it should not damage your speakers (it is not an actual clip), I agree that it does sound bad.

Game Boy is already stereo.

If you want to try NES sound with a stereo effect try NotSo Fatso for Winamp. I wish more people would start using NSFE instead of just regular NSF, you can time and tag each track, and there already are a bunch done on the website.

Files with better metadata are always good, especially given AO2's extensive support for same. Is there a spec document for NSFE?
