Is it still possible to compile up without the new blue game info screen?

I tried to comment out NEW_RENDER=1 and compile but it then barf's with "src/sdl/input.c:20:21 error: windold.h: No Such File or directory"

Thing is, with openGL as the video option the font in the intro screen looks terrible, if not unreadable. Not that it really matters, but as i'm not fussed about blue backgrounds and nice fonts on the game info screen i thought i'd try and switch it off!

Do either of the debugger's work yet BTW (old or new) - haven't had time to try yet, i guess i can try tonight smile

Keep it up - i like having a nice easy command line version of mame!! (although i am planning on playing about writing a front end, more as a Mac coding exercise than anything though)

The fonts get better at higher resolutions - if you run -noswitchres to stay at your desktop resolution it should be fine.

I don't know how possible it'll be to compile without NEW_RENDER - I think it's already pretty broken in the core.

Ah cool - okay, will have a play tonight smile

I keep forgetting that these things are often governed by what is going on in the main mame tree. It's easy to forget it's only a port when you never use the main (Windows / DOS) version any more.

As a toally OT aside...

Can anyone recommend a good book to get me started on Mac programming please?

I'm no stranger to programming but am a bit more of a jack of all trades than a specialist in one language. For my day job i do C/C++/Java/VB/C# (all on Windows) but all but a little of the VB is back end stuff, not GUI based.

Therefore i'm looking for something fairly up to date that isn't going to try and teach me to suck eggs (ie have lots of chapters covering basic C syntax) but is going to concentrate mostly on OSX programming, the toolkits and such and maybe XCode.

I've access to the ADC online library but 1) i hate trying to work from screen all the time and 2) i've found it difficult to pinpoint what i really want!

Thanks.

Unfortunately I haven't seen any really up-to-date books on the subject. O'Reilly's starter Carbon and Cocoa books are decent, but they're both pre-Xcode (and pre-Core *.*) and thus sorta useless now.

I don't know if it's just me or not but i can't perceive any difference between switchres=1 or switchres=0 :bemused:

(Tried -noswitchres and -switchres at the command line as well just in case it's ignoring the config file)

It only has an effect in full-screen. For windowed, try -r 800x600 or 1024x768 to get a nice big hi-res window.

Just compiled it and works nicely. My only complaint is with tearing on horizontally scrolling games like blktiger. Is there any option to get rid of this? On mamew I think I used triple buffering or something like that.

By the way, can anybody tell me what their average fps is on Outrun? with frameskip 0 on my 1.8G5 I get 47, which is kinda slow...

Different fonts might work better at the lower res - just replace the ui.bdf file with any .bdf format font you find around the Internet (I think there's a converter from TrueType too). I think the Windows version is using a plainer font now to combat that problem, but I prefer the prettier look of this one in hi-res :-)
