Dose MESS have enough PC clones? I have a working 1982 Compaq PC, With working Compaq system disk, DOS 2.3, and other software. I don't know how to dump bios from this and I don't know how to make a disk image from a BIG floppy disk, nor do I have the equitent to do so. Also, have A 1983 Compaq plus, Boot up wit an error mesage, I think it may have a bad chip, but anyway, would any body from MESS be interested in emulating the old Compaq, or is there enough PC clones? Any questions?

There are some pc's in MESS but whether they'd like to emulate every kind of pc ever made (there would have to be thousands) is another question entirely. I guess only the project coordinator could answer that.

I guess the Sanyo MBC-550 I used to have is under the same thing.
XT based I'd think, complete with a green screen and two 5.25 floppy drives. I imaged one floppy ages ago called WordStar (all MBC stuff sadly gone since 2002), but someone pointed out MESS didn't like it (WinImage IMA file, but different from standard DOS disk in a hex editor).
I had an Amstrad at the same time, also gone, with a few 5.25 disks I imaged (one is WitW is Carmen Sandiego, 1986), and a "Unicorn" 286 which I got rid of in the 90's, with a hard drive.

The compaq pc is one of the first IBM PC clones and one of the most famous. IIRC it uses an 80186 processor, which no 'real' IBM computers EVER used. So it probably would be a good idea to get it dumped and emulated.

I vaguely recall that the MBC-550 was actually more a "DOS compatible" than a pure PC compatible. I do agree it'd be nice to emulate the original Compaq models for their historical significance (also the Compaq 386, which was the first 386 PC out).

if you emulated the Compaq 386, you could run Windows 3.11 on it

We actually have a 386 driver (and a 486 and a P5) but I don't think they're quite good enough to run Windows (specifically, the i386+ core has no MMU, which severely limits even what sorts of DOS apps you can run).

Hmm yeah, Windows 3.11 setup makes MESS die with "i386: Unimplemented opcode C8 at 00017014" before even displaying anything.

Windows 1.0 and 2.0 oughta work though, if you can find copies
