SDLMAME 0.115u1 packages are ready for dowload. A small noteI wanted the package released ASAP to be in sync with upstream and I couldn't update man page for sdlmame with the new switches -joypad and -joypad_files. Expect this to be be due in the next release. Enjoy! Cesare.

I am afraid 115u2 + GL patch 06 contains a regression ;-)
Please update to 115u2a + GL patch 01 ..
Maybe you want to wait till end of sunday, so we have a chance to stabilize it a little bit more ;-)
I already hear them yelling at us, hey .. all those bugs .. ;-)
Cheers, Sven

Unfortunately, it takes long for me to build the packages, and I had no time to upgrade to 0.115u2a as suggested. However, packages for SDLMAME 0.115u3 are now ready to download. Enjoy!

It took a while to get back in sync with upstream, due to a bad period both at work and at home. Sadly, I had to freeze the packaging project until a couple of days ago. However, SDLMAME 0.116u4 is finally up and ready for download in the usual place. Enjoy!

Finally I managed to package SDLMAME 0.118 in the usual place. I'm sorry, but I've been forced to drop support for both Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) and Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft). The SDL library packages are too old to compile the latest video rendering code. Be warned that upgrading will destroy all .cfg files (as recommended by Arbee) and mame.ini (joystick configuration options are changed and the old ones would get input system stunned). Please read the release notes in the download page. I'll try my best to have 0.118u1 packaged, but I now have to set up my new Feisty box... Enjoy!

it prolly requires a version or revision of libc6 that you don't have installed. see if there is an update, if not, you'll have to wait till it gets update or download & install the required version/revision & compile it yourself... or, in case you didn't read his post: I've been forced to drop support for both Ubuntu 6.06 (Dapper Drake) and Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft).

i'm on kubuntu linux 7.10 x86. i'm trying to run sdlmame from your package (with kxmame w/ sdlmame support, and sdlmame by itself) and this is my result: sdlmame 005 Fatal error: unable to open log file (src/emu/mame.c:341) Ignoring MAME exception: Fatal error: unable to open log file (src/emu/mame.c:341) same thing with -log: sdlmame -log 005 Fatal error: unable to open log file (src/emu/mame.c:341) Ignoring MAME exception: Fatal error: unable to open log file (src/emu/mame.c:341) i haven't been able to run any games with kxmame, and it only generates a 0 byte log, i posted about my experience here. could you suggest anything to me c.falco? UPDATE: ok i managed to fix the problem. it apparently was not sdlmame like i was beginning to think it was, you can see how i solved the issue here.

Here it is, SDLMAME 0.118u5. For those who need it, manpages should now cover every option, both from baseline and SDLMAME specific, including latest updates. Grab and enjoy it!

I'm looking for a cross-compiling environment, but I still haven't found any.

Hi there Ubuntu MAME users. Perhaps one of you know what I'm doing wrong, trying to get mame to run some old vectrex roms. My troubles are written up here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558167 Basically, I can get the bios to load, but not any of the cartridges. Thanks for any advice.

From the commandline, this works:
./mess vectrex -cart whatever.zip
(yes, you can leave the cart images zipped).
Beyond that it's likely an issue with either kxmame or the Ubuntu packaging.

That's what I'm doing (although I'm executing xmess.SDL instead). Any idea what the problem might be? If there was any documentation that went with this stuff I'd have a fighting chance of figuring out where it's looking. As is, it's just a broken black box to me.

mame and mess could really use a "verbose" mode where they tell you where they're looking for which files, and how they got the idea to look in that place in the 1st place. It seems the main problem I'm having now is that mess can't find the vectrex bios. I've littered it in near every directory I think mess might look, but I have no idea what directory mess is really looking in.... sigh...

xmess is old: it requires the cartridges to be in the software_path. SDLMESS lets you give the full path to the cartridge on the command line, which is more intuitive and Unix-y. SDLMESS also has a -verbose switch.

Okay, the confusion is starting to dissipate. mess.SDL is currently in the Ubuntu repository. It is old, unmaintained, and does not work (in xmess-sdl package). sdlmess is new and shiny and *not* in the Ubuntu repository. How totally annoying.
Let's see what I can make of this.

Sorry for asking yet another question. Where are the subversion repositories for sdlmess and sdlmame? I'll need to compile my own because I'm on an exclusively 64-bit system. On the mess webpage ( http://www.mess.org) it says this is it: svn checkout svn://messdev.fdns.net/mess/ but svn says connection refused. For mame the only place I could find is: http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/but the source is available only in a .zip file -- is there no subversion repository?

SDLMAME doesn't have a public-facing source control repository. You just download the zip and build from there.

SDLMAME uses the MESS SVN repository, and you used the correct URL. Just try again, sometimes its down a couple of minutes. Or just use the zip like Vas Crabb said.

SDLMAME 0.119 i386 packages for Ubuntu 7.04 are ready for download in the usual place . Enjoy! I'm also experimenting with amd64 packages building using the Ubuntu developing system, but we should consider this still alpha stage. Expect more news in the (hopefully near) future!

Hey guys! Is there any chance that there will be a PS3 build of this package? It is a Cell BE (ppc64) based platform.
Update: I noted the ubuntu package for this has cell CPU selection in the makefile... Compiling now!
OK. I have compiled it. How does one run the program?
I have ROMS, but I need to know what the name of the link is, etc.

From what tarball did you build your package? The upstream (sdlmame0119u2.zip) or my source package? If you build from upstream, the executable should be in the main directory where you exctracted the source tree (i.e. sdlmame0119u2/) and named mamecbe. By default, you have to put your roms in ~/.mame/roms/, or you can issue and edit the resulting mame.ini at your convenience. On the other hand, if you build succesfully my package - you are my hero!
I was desperately seeking a way to try a ppc build, as I only own an i386 machine and Ubuntu development site only supplies intel 32/64 bit building environments - the executable is named sdlmame whichever the building target, and for roms and other resource location, please have a look at /usr/share/doc/sdlmame/README.Debian
- please confirm you did it!

I built it from "orig" source file, and it runs (looks real nice), but it is dog slow, I suspect due to no 3D accell on this platform yet. Damn Sony, and their fear of releasing the API of their GPU core!
Anyhow... it looks like I built the first one you mentioned, not yours. I could try that though. I am on Gutsy, and have the newest core, and just recently got libc6 upgrades and gcc too!
I used "ignore" for my build, and initially had a failure at one of the driver files for a damned Mahjong game.c I tried deleting that file, but the compiler didn't like that move at all! :-]. So I re-built it all over again with the ignore switch. So, AFAIK it went OK, but I guess it vould be all messed up. Is there a way to get the speed up? Turn off sound or the like? I know that Idea sucks, but I would be willing to work toward PC like function. Is there a link to your file, so I can attempt to build it?
Thanks for the executable help. I was looking for "sdlmame", and would never have noticed the mamecbe. I guess I should start reading the docs a bit more thoroughly. Thanks again!

Yeah, well... It looks like I DID build it from your page's "orig.tar" for feisty fawn.
I turned on the cell cpu switch, and turned off the zlib and the other module switch mentioned in the readme, iirc, and set it for big endian. I built it in /usr/src/sdlmame-0.119u2.

Good news anyway, but we should make things a little more clear. I suppose you downloaded my .orig.tar.gz and untarred it, and then edited the makefile and issued the make command in the sdlmame-0.119u2 directory, right? Well, that's a good first step, but also the same thing as unzipping the sdlmame0119u2.zip file you find on Arbee's site. You didn't build an Ubuntu binary package that way, you simply built sdlmame itself. The building process right from an Ubuntu source package is something a bit different. You don't simply get the sdlmame executable, but a whole .deb package that you can install in your system with gdebi or the console command sudo dpkg --install <package_name>. You can look here for some short info (see particulary q&a 6.14). If you then decide to try to build my package, you must first perform some additional task: - install the dpkg-dev package either through Synaptic or the console command sudo apt-get install dpgk-dev.
- as my package aren't in no repository yet, download all of the three files (orig.tar.gz, diff.gz, dsc) to the same directory instead of issuing the apt-get source sdlmame console command.
- after unpacking the source, peer at the sdlmame-0.119u2/debian/control file and make sure that all the packages listed after the "Build-depends:" entry are installed in your system. If they are not, install them and be prepared that they will install other packages in turn: that's ok.
If the building process is successful, you will get the two binary packages sdlmame and sdlmame-tools. See details on my site.

Yes, I built it from the orig source. Since the build worked, should I not be able to create a working deb package?
Can I not "open" your deb package and make mods to the same makefile, and close it then use it?
Or, send you my makefile so you can make the version you mention and the toolkit?
I have the deb tools as I have been working with gutsy, and git, and various other DLs for getting BlueTooth, and other things up and running.
I am at 2.6.23 on my kernel, hopefully with NTFS w/write added for my USB drive (haven't checked)
Do you know what I need to do to get the speed normalized? Or do I have to wait till Sony gives us access to the RSX GPU and the other Cell cores?

Or, send you my makefile so you can make the version you mention and the toolkit? When you build a binary package from the source one, you don't use the upstream makefile directly, but a "special" one, as the packaging system requires. Once you have exctracted the source tree with dpkg-source -x sdlmame_xxx.dsc go into it and issue which should build the .deb binary packages in the parent directory. Do you know what I need to do to get the speed normalized? Or do I have to wait till Sony gives us access to the RSX GPU and the other Cell cores? I'm sorry, but I can't help. I'm not a Mame developer, I'm just doing the packaging job.

IIRC, Ricardo is the man that wrote "Volare".
I need to get 120a into my PS3 to see if the speed is back to normal. It will be so great if they get the RSX figured out so my Armagetron Advanced runs good.
I get 60fps in WindBlows and 150fps in Linux x86_64 with it!
I'd love to see it run that well on my PS3!
ASCII ya later...

Due to number of broken drivers, I decided not to release SDLMame 0.120u2, to prevent being flooded with bug reports.
In the next few days, I'll focus on getting sdlmame packages into Ubuntu Multiverse repository. It's now or never!
Just stay tuned, of course I'll be back with future releases!

I tried compiling your package with Debian unstable and it worked flawlessly. Maybe you could try getting it into Debian instead. It will flow to Ubuntu from there nicely.
Though I have to warn you that Debian people can be quite strict on various strange issues. But you should have a good chance since the current Mame packages on Debian are ancient. (Not to mention that SDLMame is listed as a variant of XMame, urghhh.)

Unfortunately, contributing to Ubuntu through Debian is even harder than contributing to Ubuntu itself. The process to become a Debian contributor, at least as it is described on Debian site, seems quite longer to me. I'm planning to do the opposite instead, i.e. contribute back sdlmame package to Debian once officially accepted, through the Utnubu project or in a similar way. BTW, I'm really glad to know my .debs are good for Debian too. It means I've done them the right way, after all. Thanks for letting me know and happy Debianing!

You don't have to become a Debian developer for that. You can let some existing dev (such as the previous maintainer of XMame and SDLMame, if he is still around) know about your packaging efforts and they might upload it for you.

SDLMAME 0.120u4 is up at usual place. I forgot to mention that from 0.120u3, amd64 build are now available through the Launchpad development site. They've been tested for some time by a couple of users and feedbacks are good. However, bear in mind that: - the build process may take a long time, as the building queue is sometimes slow. Please be patient, downloading link will appear when binaries are ready.
- since I don't own a 64bit machine I can't test the binaries at home. However, I'll do my best to support and fix anything, if you report it.

Enjoy!

Hello,
I hope you can help - i am new to linux, having just bought a ps3 and installed ubuntu 'gutsy gibbon' to play mame.
I have managed to install mame using xmame and kxmame, but there are all sorts of problems as this are old versions.
I would like to install sdlmame, but i have no idea how to compile stuff - i have tried but failed, my computer skills are not that great...
is it possible to get a debian for a ppc version of sdlmame? or can you point me in the right direction of how i might get this to work?
thanks in advance
Lee

First, make sure you have the compile tools by typing:
sudo apt-get install build-essential libsdl1.2-dev
Next, cd into the extracted SDLMAME folder and type:
make CELL=1
That will compile.

You also need to install libxinerama-dev, so try
sudo apt-get install libxinerama-dev
and then restart the compile.

thanks - that worked this time. Just a little bit of extra help if you can, i would appreciate it.
i have managed to get mame running, and my roms run ok by opening the file mamecbe (i dont know if this is the correct way) but i do not get any sound...
Also i cannot get my sixaxis controller to be recognised - i have googled it, but i cant find any info on how to go about making ubuntu recognise the sixaxis...
thanks for your time

Did you take a look at the new -sixaxis switch?
Unfortunately I don't own a PS3, so I can't try it myself.

Hi there, I'm a total Ubuntu/Linux noob and am having a hard time getting this installed. I just downloaded 0.121 and followed your steps posted above. First, when I try and do this: sudo apt-get install build-essential libsdl1.2-dev I get this: Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libsdl1.2-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package libsdl1.2-dev has no installation candidate If I just cd to the extracted SDLMame directory and do this: I get this: make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. And if I try and do this: sudo apt-get install libxinerama-dev I get this: Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libxinerama-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package libxinerama-dev has no installation candidate Nothing is working! Help? Thanks!

Looks like you don't have all repository settings right.
Could you post your /etc/apt/sources.list?

./mamecbe -sixaxis (or in your .ini file). That only works if your kernel recognizes the controller in the first place though.

Uhm... did you have a working connection when you installed from cd? Digging in your sources.list, I found several occurences of "# Line commented out by installer because it failed to verify:". In short, you have no online repositories enabled! The easy way to do this is going through the System menu, Admin, and then look for Software Sources (or something similar, I have a bit different menu layout due to locale settings). You'll have to enter your user password; check all repositories and confirm.

I know I've been out of sync for a while, however... SDLMAME 0.112u2 is out . Sadly, it's time to farewell to Dapper and Edgy. Binary packages are getting bigger and bigger, and I had to make a choice to save web space. On the other hand, I guess no one is still using Ubuntu releases lesser than Feisty on desktops. Enjoy!

Faster than this, which is however fast enough! SDLMAME 0.122u8 is ready for download. Needless to say: packaging does not magically solve any issues, so if you find your favourite game doesn't work any more, switch back to 0.122u7. As I can't keep it online, be sure to keep your copy safe. Enjoy!

I'm very glad to announce that SDLMAME has been accepted in Ubuntu. Packages will be available in the multiverse repository component, since MAME licence expressly disallows commercial use whereas universe component policy requires GPL-compliant distribution terms. First release to be included is 0.123, starting from forthcoming Ubuntu 8.04 (codename Hardy Heron), due for release next April. Let me finally remind you that universe and multiverse components are official repositories, but they are community-fed and don't get distributed on CD, i.e. you'll have to download SDLMAME from the net.

Awesome! This is a big step in the right direction - there are still Linux distros that pack in old versions of xmame, so hopefully more people will step up to the plate to get SDLMAME put in in its place.

This is indeed a very good news. I'm not familiar with the way packages are managed in multiverse repository. Can we expect sdlmame package to be updated regularly (at least for each new stable version), or will it be updated only for each new version of ubuntu (that is for 8.04 then 8.10...) ? Thank you c.falco !
ppfe2 the xmame frontend that also works with sdlmame

Yippie! Now, we can simply install it with our various and sundry package managers.
I am surprised at how long some titles/projects take to be carried in a linux distro. This one does morph (read improve)pretty regularly though.
Whereas look at a title like Armagetron and Armagetron Advanced. It has so-so popularity, is a really good game (opinion), but I feel that SDLMame would be far more popular, and more in demand. Yet Armagetron is in a lot of ditros! Armagetron did run better from an earlier point in its development, so maybe that is why it ended up in everything sooner than a lot of titles I have seen.
I am glad it (SDLMame)is becoming mainstream linux included. The ROMs should be released by their authors/owners for non-profit use. That is how I feel. Then we could all feel a little better... nahhhh!
Have a beer!

I still have to figure this out. As I'm only a contributor I have to upload new releases through what's called "sponsoring" i.e. I submit the patches and a developer picks them and then uploads the new version to the repository. However, expect updated "unofficial" packages to be released through my site...

I am surprised at how long some titles/projects take to be carried in a linux distro. It depends on many factors, including popularity but also complexity of packaging. SDLMAME is easy to build, but it took a lot to "debianize" it, adding manpages, conf files, installation scripts and so on. And I had to learn so maaaany other things to have it done "the right way"

Ok, packages for SDLMAME 0.124 are finally out at usual place . I'm going to be busy next weeks, and I could miss a few unstable releases, but don't worry, I'll be back ASAP. Meanwhile, enjoy SDLMAME 0.124!
