Hey looks pretty nice, I have to admit I'd love to see something like this implemented in EMULaunch, or a similar full screen launcher. It'd be nice to use the iTunes like interface to organise your roms, screenshots, settings and maybe rename the game title and then have a launcher like EMULaunch or mamewah to run them in. It'd save all the time I spend editing the XML file for EMUlaunch.

Great looking app.
One issue I have... it would be nice if it only displayed roms you actually have (or a option for that).
I only have about 60 roms so that leaves me with over 3000 greyed out entries. That's a lot of scrolling.

This is great! Now that I have this app, I can keep the old SDLMAME 0.113 around so I can run Killer Instinct 2 at full speed, while still being able to keep up with the current versions when I run the newest versions with MacMAMEInfoX. In other words, having two apps means that the prefs and app. supports/plug-ins aren't shared.

Has anyone determined how to get screenshots/flyers to show up in this front end? So far the program seems very nice for an early beta!

One thing that would be nice is if window settings were saved each time you booted up. Right now it defaults to "ID" being the way that the list is sorted, and if I change it to, say, "Title", it doesn't stay set on "Title" when I re-launch.

Nice.
Are you also going to look at adding support for sdlmess (messtunes?) ? Or are you sticking purely to mame?

>etabeta78I I tried multi definition of roms folder. But it`s necessary to put clone ROM on the same place as the folder of parent ROM.

Sorry, I`m not going to upgrade to leopard for a while. I might open the source file to the public in next version.] Can you compile it on leopard by yourself?

1.0 and 1.1 worked on 10.5.0 upon updating to 10.5.1, 1.0-2.0 no longer work I'm sure it can be compiled on leopard, I just wonder if that would make the code stable or not.

MAME_Tunes is great, I love the way you grouped the clones of a ROM together and it's so easy to change the default set. I would like something like: Press 1 to play in SDL-MAME, 2 to play in MAMEOSX...

I downloaded your binary version of 2.1, still crashes.
Downloaded source, built "release", and MameTunes runs again, no crashes.
I will post a XCode 3.0 (OS X 10.5) build on my sdlmame page (linked in the signature below)

hi, I resurrect this thread because I'm not sure how to contact the developer of MameTunes elsewhere. anyway, I'm trying to setup SDLMAME to be as friendly as possible on the mac of a friend of mine, and I decided to use MameTunes as a frontend because is simple and fast but my life would be even easier if a few features could be added: 1. a way to disable the debug (I know this is missing just because it's been a month since last MameTunes release and the debug activation in MAME is more recent... I'm not complaining, just pointing the need of an update ) 2. a way to add optional commands to SDLMAME. Namely, assume I would like to add an option which is supported by MAME but not (yet) by MameTunes (e.g. the -nodebug above). It would be cool to have an 'option' field in the SDLMAME settings screen to add -nodebug and more commands, which could simply be passed as additional command line arguments. I guess in the end MameTunes is simply launching the application with a series of options which depend on the choices of the setting screen... would it be hard to add at the end of the command line the content of this new 'options' field? For instance, in the case of the -nodebug command, I could add -nodebug to this 'options' field and MameTunes could simply pass the command ./sdlmame "other_options_from_MameTunes_interface" -nodebug allowing me to run the emulator with no debug. It would also increase future compatibility with no need of updates of the frontend: if a new option is added to MAME and is not present in MameTunes, I could add it simply to this field, while waiting for an updated release of the frontend 3. support for multiple rompaths. I asked for this before and the author answered it was possible, but I don't see a way to do this in 3.1, so I wonder how should I add a second folder for roms... EDIT: I hope I managed to explain what I meant, especially at point 2. Anyway, if more clarifications are needed simply let me know and thanks for the wonderful frontend!

too late to edit again my post, but I found out that all the issue mentioned above can be solved by disabling "SDLMAME Easy Settings", which tells SDLMAME to take options from mame.ini. very smart design and once again compliments to the author of this small jewel however, it would be cool to have some of the suggestion above implemented, both to show more possible configurations to the end user and (for the multiple rompaths) to obtain a real playlist with all possible roms from different directories

I, for one, am thrilled to see this update. Thank you very much!
One question, though - What is the best way to contact you if there are questions, problems or feature requests?

Nothing changed in 0.137 as far as anything frontends would care about so it should be fine.

Not a problem... If you're new to the world of MAME on OS X, I would suggest starting with MAME_Tunes as a front end, as it's a dedicated Mac application, and a little easier to set up and maintain.
If you need help getting set up, please let us know.

thanks again will do.
***Edit***
Since SDLmame is now included in mame, do I just have to point MAME_Tunes to the Mame 0.137 exe file? or do I have to compile it?

Have you built your own MAME, or are you using a pre built version?
Building your own is fairly easy (See the instructions at the top of this forum), and gives you some control in the upgrade process.
Either way, you'll want to point MAME_Tunes at the mame binary (remember, an '.exe' file is not a Mac application), and as a matter of personal preference, I keep my MAME support files in a separate folder from the MAME application.
If I feel creative this weekend, I'll try my hand at writing a setup guide for MAME_Tunes...

For 0.137 with no u patches you don't need the endings step. Just continue on.

Even if everything works as expected, I'd suggest opening up Disk Utility, and Repair Disk Permissions when you get a chance (just to be on the safe side)

So I did this: [b]Update 2: to build Intel OS X, edit src/emu/cpu/dsp56k/dsp56k.c. Go to line 35 (should be blank with an #include on the next line). Add #undef L_SET and save.
my question is about "makefile will auto-detect your OS and you simply can type "make" or "make -j3" for dual-cores."
where do I find that to make sure it's correct? is that in terminal or in the actual makefile?

then how do i actually run mame? Would I run it from terminal? Sorry if your getting tired from my posts, I just find it a bit confusing. Also what is the "mame Binary"? is it the windows Binary programs on their release page? Once again, I am sooo confused. and apologize for all of the questions.

Okay, the first thing to do is get MAME built.
In versions prior to 0.136u1, you had to expressly tell the makefile the os you were building for.
For 0.137 (which is what I'm assuming you're building), you can simply type 'make' in the Terminal. If yours is a Dual Core Intel Mac, if you type 'make -j3' it will compile faster (I don;t believe it has any other effect)
Next, the 'mame binary' refers to the application that is built by the compile process.
I refrain from calling it an 'application' because it doesn't behave like one would expect a Mac application to behave (It's a 'command-line' application, which means it can be run from the Terminal, not by double clicking on it).
When the compile process is complete, you will find a file in your MAME folder simply called 'mame'. This is the MAME binary/application/executible that you will be pointing your front end at.
The job of the front end application is to provide you with a user friendly interface that takes your commands in a way that Mac applications do, and passes that command line to the MAME application, sparing you the tedium of typing a long string of commands to launch a game.
I will make a real effort this weekend to put together a step-by step guide for setting up MAME_Tunes (Including suggestions for keeping your support files organized).
I know it all seems a bit overwhelming at first (we've all been there), but once you get going, it should all begin to make sense.

where do I find that to make sure it's correct? is that in terminal or in the actual makefile? Darth Vader says NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You're making it too hard. 1) Unzip 0.137 source 2) Open Terminal, cd into the mame0137 directory 3) Type "make -j3" (assuming 2+ cores) 4) Go get a sandwich or something while it builds 5) Play games It's seriously that easy now in 0.137. 0.136 had a host of other complications that we've automated away.

You... You mean I no longer have to sacrifice a llama, or stick pins in my Steve Ballmer action figure to get MAME to compile correctly? I mean, I may still do that... Just not to get MAME to compile...

Darth Vader says NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

what file do I edit to tell mame where the roms are? I created a roms folder in the mame folder but don't I have to edit a config file or something?

By default a roms folder in the MAME folder will just work. Make sure you don't unzip the ROMs - just put the zip files in the roms folder (and case matters - it must be named roms all lowercase).

This is a 'How-To' that I sent to another forum member some time ago. It was ment for the previous version of MAME_Tunes (so it may be a little dated), but it should help get you started (I'm working on revising it, but now that you have MAME built, I thought it might help you...)
Launch MAME Tunes, and go to the Application Menu (That's the 'MAME_Tunes' menu to the left of 'File'), and select 'Preferences...'
The Preferences window has several buttons across the top. Select the 'MAME' button, and set the path to the MAME application by using the 'Select' button next to the 'SDLMAME' field (in my case it looks like this - /Applications/sdlmame0135u2/mame ).
Now, you'll also need to set the path to your ROMs folder, as well as other support files.
This is where it can get a bit tricky.
As a matter of personal preference, I keep my ROM Sets, Screenshots, Titles, and other support files in a separate folder called 'MAME Support Files', to avoid accidentally deleting files when SDLMAME gets updated (which is about every week or two, on average). Set your path(s) accordingly.
Now select the 'Setup' button.
Export the MAME ROM list (save the resulting file to the SDLMAME folder, as the next time you update SDLMAME, you'll need to export a new list).
Once the export is complete, Import the list (personally, I believe the position of the buttons should be reversed, but that's a minor cosmetic issue...).
Don't worry about importing MAME List JP, unless you want Japanese characters for japanese games.
At this point, quit MAME_Tunes, and relaunch it. This will save your changes. I've noticed that there is a (minor) bug in MAME_Tunes that can produce an error during quitting, resulting in a loss of changes to the application. Quitting between major setup operations can minimize these problems. (*Note - This problem seems to be resolved in the latest version)
Now, you'll want to audit your ROMs. In the Preferences window (or under the 'Setup' menu) export the Audit Status. Again, save the file to the SDLMAME folder).
This will bring up the Terminal to run the audit. This is yet another minor, cosmetic bug (MAME_Tunes is not perfect, but it gets the job done). When the audit is done (you'll see a standard terminal prompt once the operation is done... It can take a few minutes), import the audit results.
Quit and relaunch MAME_Tunes again, and update the file status (again from either the Preferences window, or the 'Setup' menu). Quit and relaunch one more time, and we're just about ready to go.
Close the Preferences window (if it's open), and take a look at the game list.
I should point out that most of what I'm going to tell you from here on out is optional, but this is how I have my system set up...
Under the 'View' menu, under 'Column' select/put a check next to - -Image -Clones -Plays -AuditStatus -ImportVersion
Games you are missing will show up in the list, but will be grayed out. If you wish to only see the games you have, select 'Available ROMS' from the 'ROMS' section of the 'View menu.
Notice the 'AuditStatus' column on your Game List. If a game is listed as 'Bad' this means that one or more of the ROMs in that set are missing or incorrect. (Other statuses are 'Good' or 'Best Available'.
Right-Click (or Option-Click) on the game in question, and select 'information' from the pop-up menu (also available via the 'i' button, or under the 'View' menu).
Click the 'Audit' button to see a report for the selected game.
Double-click on a game to start it, press 'esc' to exit to MAME_Tunes.
This should get you going. If you need more help, please feel free to ask either as a Private Message, or start a new thread on the SDLMAME board.
One thing to keep in mind - We're not allowed to ask or tell about ROM Sites on the main board(s) (Legal issues).
The following statement is true... The preceding statement is false.

thank you for the how to for mame_tunes.
no worries about where to get ROMS, etc. I definitely understand. I may have questions about BIOS files, but not where to get them.
once again, thank you for all your help.
