I am stumped. I upgraded to 0.122 this morning. Worked great. Tonight when I try to run MESS I get a single dialog box that titled "Allocation error - Exiting". The error says "Cannot allocate Icon lists." I hit OK and the mess screen appears and disappears very quickly.

I deleted my MESSUI.ini file and the other config files, still nothing. I even downloaded .121 and .120 and unzipped it to the desktop, it won't run there either. I will reboot tomorrow and see if it works then, but I can't understand why it's not working now. I also try running the program as Administrator (this is Vista), no go.

Well, I came home today after work and tried MESS again.... it works. I didn't change any system settings. I didn't even reboot the computer. The only thing I did at all was shutdown Steam, that's it.

I will run steam again tonight, leave it running, and see if it's related.

Steam is indeed the problem. MESS was working for me this afternoon, then I loaded up Steam to play Day of Defeat: Source for 1 hour, quit the game but kept steam running. Again trying to start MESS I get the same error. Closing steam entirely fixed the problem.

It appears to be a matter of leaving Steam running long enough before this becomes a problem.

It seems incredibly weird that this random program would cause MESS to fail. Thoughts? Are you just running out of memory or something like that?

It's not that out of the blue, Steam does some kind of Direct3D trickery to provide its in-game Steam Community overlay on top of whatever game you're playing (Steam or non-Steam), I can see that potentially causing issues.

What if Jonah was to change MESS to use ddraw instead of D3D?

Does a matching MAME build also fail with steam loaded? If so, then that does point the finger at Direct3D or something.

MAME works fine. I use the command line version and the screen mode is using Direct3D. The issue is starting the MESS gui in the first place. This error appears before a system to emulate can even be selected, and before the main window appears. I can't even change any settings unless I terminate Steam (or edit the INI file manually)

I don't think memory is an issue. I have 2 gig and the normal load seems to hover around 45%.

This might be useful.

If I had to guess, Steam might have a GDI leak. My college buddy tracked down an issue like that in one of those web toolbars that people inexplicably seem to like. It did much the same kind of thing: prevented stuff from displaying after running for a set period of time.

In regards to Steam, GDI leaks were a problem for me under Windows 9X but this was no longer a problem once I switched to XP many years ago. Steam used to consume GDI resources during chat sessions outside of a game (on the desktop). Once the small amount of memory used for GDI objects was used up then graphics would become garbled and new windows would appear blank. I actually made an animated GIF showing this problem in action. As far as I understand it, Windows systems based on NT did away with limited GDI resources (perhaps up to a greater point).

However the problem is now worse than I suspected. Steam is not the real culprit here, since this morning I shut down steam and MESS still will not start, giving me the same error. This time, I shut down Internet Explorer and Opera, both of which had been running idle for the last few days. I work on websites so I often leave these running in the midst of a project. Once I shut down both of these, I was once again able to open MESS.
