Ok, let's start a new thread as the previous one has more than 100 posts now. wink

After a while, SDLMAME 0.125 is finally packaged and ready for download .
At present only the package for 8.04 is available; one suitable for 7.10 will follow soon.

Release note: from Hardy on, SDLMAME will be linked against the libexpat1 package, as it has finally reached release 2.x. Previously, expat code supplied with SDLMAME source was used, as packaged version (1.95 in Gutsy) made cheat engine segfault.

Enjoy!
cool

Hi wallyweek,

I've tried your Gutsy package. There's a problem with the SDL versioning as it's expecting SDL of a higher version but the sdl package in the Gutsy repo doesn't provide it.

Same problem : The package expects the >= 1.2.13, but the version installed in Gutsy is the 1.2.11....

I think perhaps wallyweek built the package on Gutsy with the environment for Hardy. In either case, it's either the new sdl package gets backported or wallyweek rebuilds it.

I'm sorry, I've been away in the last few days and I'm at work at present.

I'll have the package rebuilt and uploaded (hopefully) this evening.

@ wallyweek
do you have any control or influence over the sdlmame packages in the ubuntu repo? (i guess i'm asking if you're the maintainer or know the maintainer).

if you are or you do know the maintainer, we could use an update in the repo...
(i'm on intrepid & the latest version in the repo is 0.123, although i am using your 0.125 packages).

I am the maintainer, but I can't update it directly as I am not an uploader. Furthermore, this will be the first upload I propose, and I have to review the sponsoring process. i.e. it will take some time. wink

I also guess updated versions will be available for intrepid only, so unless arranging some backporting process, I'll have to keep maintaining unofficial packages on my site. I hope to sort this out soon. shocked

Just a question: are you using binary .deb package for hardy or did you build a binary for intrepid from source .src package?

i am on intrepid, so it doesn't matter to me if the updates are only for intrepid! wink

i use the packages for hardy from your website. (since last time i grabbed a package from there {0.125} you didn't have any intrepid packages).

Wallyweek:

Since you're the maintainer of the official Ubuntu repository version of MAME, I'll bitchwhinecomplain here...

Once again I'm back on Ubuntu (I've been distro-hopping as of late) and tried SDLMAME from the Canonical repositories. Everything works 100%, except for sound which resembles whale fart noises. (I don't experience this audio issue with any other software.)

I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu with nVidia closed-source drivers, and plenty of power to run the few 8-bit games I've tried. It's a relatively new install.

The only thing I've fiddled with is downloading libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio. The story behind this is I tried Sauerbraten at someone else's suggestion. Worked fine, played it once, forgot about the game.

Last week a friend wanted to see if Linux could do games, so I fired it up again, but lo-and-behold audio failed to start. It gave an error message stating it could not initialize sdl audio or something. The fix on Ubuntu forums suggested downloading the aforementioned libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio. This got Sauerbraten sound working again. But did it break MAME sound...?

I attempted uninstalling this file to see if it was affecting MAME, but both synaptic and apt-get told me removing this file would also result in multitudes of other programs being removed... Huh? (I didn't bother removing it as the other files had important-sounding names.)

Well, whatever. Any hints or tips or wildly amusing sarcastic remarks?

export SDL_AUDIO_DRIVER={Google for possible values, try 'oss' or 'dsp' or 'alsa' first}

Installing the sdl-pulseaudio package might have been fatal though - PulseAudio is new technology and the only distro that sets it up right so far is Fedora 9 (it worked in F8 after some updates but had many issues. it actually runs well in F9).

Thanks for the quick reply.

I was using F8 before jumping to Ubuntu8.04. Although I did like Fedora, F9 seemed a bit too cutting edge for little ol' me, so I gave it a skip. (I'll keep my eyes peeled for F10.)

At any rate, your suggestion has so far yielded no joy. But I'm wondering: even though synaptic and apt-get will not allow me to remove libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio without removing a bunch of other stuff, would it be safe for me to do some manual deleting??? Synaptic at least tells me what is installed and where it's located.

Yep, pulseaudio is a pain in the neck, it's also breaking sound in Flash plugin for Firefox 3. cry

Did you try to revert to Alsa? Simply go to System|Preferences|Audio and set all listbox to Alsa.

SDLMAME 0.125u6 is finally packaged for downloading .

I'm sorry, I'm a bit busy at present, and soon I will go on holidays, so I won't probably package next releases in the 0.125u cycle. eek

However, this is not the end, I'll be back ASAP. smile

Well...

I tried changing to ALSA via System>>Preferences>>Sound, but still the same damn thing -- farting whales! (That's the best way I can discribe the audio. It's not stuttering or anything related to performance. It's more like a low pitch rumbling mixed loudly overtop the game audio.) So maybe pulseaudio ain't the culprit. For the record, Flash audio works hunky-dory fine for me. In fact all audio works well, except for MAME.

I also tried your non-repository version without any joy. The next step is to roll my own, unless there are some secret mame.ini settings I'm unfamiliar with? Sample rate doesn't kill the whale gas, and latency just makes the farts lag.

Hmm... I'm pretty certain MAMETesters only allows testers to use official MAME in order to rule out any issues related to non-official ports. That leaves Linux lusers such as myself out in the cold.

And to be honest, I'm just a casual MAME user these days. Really really really casual. Most of my free time is used up with other interests, but I still like to keep my Bubble Bobble skills up to snuff. And Robotron is always good way to get the armpits all sweaty and gross.

SDLMAME 0.126 is finally packaged.
I'm sorry, I was at first on vacation, and since I returned I've been really busy.

A short note:
Like in baseline and upstream, from now on the debugger will be always built-in, and can be accessed with both configuration and line options (see manpage for further info).
However, GTK+ refuses to run a program in debugging mode when it's setuid, and sdlmame happens to be setuid to save configurations, states etc in proper directories.
If you can't wait to see the debugger in action, first of all you must chmod sdlmame executable to remove setuid.
This may sound bad, however consider that the debugger is only useful for Mame developers. It's NOT needed to play the games, it also speeds emulation down indeed. To cut it short: if you don't need it, forget about it.

You can download packages from the usual place.

Enjoy!

Err, what "proper" directories? SDLMAME really prefers for global installs to use ~/.mame/ - it's both The Unix Way(tm) and eliminates the need for setuid :-)

This is the wrong place to ask for QMC2 support, but regarding your specific issue, see here: http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=2179311&forum_id=658600

Without proper support for libphonon, you won't get 0.2.b5 (SVN) working! It has the Phonon parts of the code enabled (but nothing real new yet). Use the latest release please (0.2.b4) or a Phonon enabled Qt 4.4 build on Ubuntu.

When using Qt 4.3, the libary dependency will be automatically removed, BTW. Qt 4.3 doesn't support Phonon at all.

It looks like I'm having the same issues fart_flower was having before (the "farting whales" sounds) on ubuntu 9.04. I had NO sound before running through the tutorial:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=789578

Now I HAVE sound, but I get the farting whales accompaniment. Any ideas? I tried playing with the audio_latency option, but it didn't seem to do a whole lot on there.

My specs:
Ubuntu 9.04 x64
q6600 2.4ghz
HD 4870
4gb ram
sdlmame 0.130u4

I'm still trying to solve this, and it seems it is strictly Ubuntu-related. Nobody is reporting sound issues on other distro AFAIK.

This is also the main reason for which I still haven't released 0.131.

Some news:
  • I finally solved the sound issue on my box! I installed libsdl1.2debian-all and removed libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio which was useful in 8.10 to stop PulseAudio clashing with Flash Player
  • Yes, I'm considering packaging wolfmame too, but it will take some time
  • I'm trying to setup an apt repository, so webspace on my site is going under restructuring
  • I'm considering dropping unstable releases for 8.04, which is LTS but also a bit outdated for gamers. I won't build 131u1 for sure.
  • SLDMAME 0.131u1 is packaged, you can grab it at usual place! cool
