I would like to use this chance to ask what is MESS stance on non-commodore ROMS, i.e. IDEDOS, JiffyDOS, DolphinDOS, etc. I understand ATM would be futile to add them since bug reports might become unnecesarily complex, but I would like to know if they will be added in the future.

MESS would have to be an organization to have a stance. I personally think supporting third-party BIOSes is the worst idea since N64 HLE but many MESS drivers already support them.

well, the purpose of MAME and MESS is to support an important part of mankind modern history called VIDEOGAMES, and everything that is related to them, to not let us forget them and what they represented at their time in their respective nations... And third part BIOSes are inside the history.

Heh. You're going to be surprised when Aaron's CAX presentation gets posted if you think that's the purpose of MAME :-)

But, seriously, we all hope that MAME and MESS will stay on Earth more time than ourselves... More time than its authors. This is why the information part of these emulators is so important. It will keep the memory of children, programmers, bootleggers, beggars and princes alive even after their deaths. It will keep the hardware, and, with this, keep the software.

In the past, I read on a site: MESS is the emulator that emulates systems which only five or six people care about.

Yes! This is so true and this is so beautiful. MESS is keeping those five or six people memories here with us.

I don't think any computer is *that* obscure But it's nice when systems nobody's heard of show up fully working (e.g. the Eastern Bloc stuff).

unfortunately, with computers is not as easy as with arcades. e.g. ZX81 supports as BIOS variants two different implementations of Forth, both never produced by Sinclair. One was available as an add-on for schools which wanted to use a ZX81 to teach informatics, the other could have been ordered as a chip replacement to the producer. Therefore, for both we are quite close to the situation of some obscure bootleg included in MAME...

Moreover, to install new unofficial components on home computer is way more common than it is on arcade PCB: sometimes imho it's quite hard to decide the threshold

There are also a few BIOS which could be close to homemade, but in MESS we have a flag for modified computers, so in the worst case one can leave the parent with the 'official' BIOS only, and create a clone (with such a flag) with all the homemade BIOSes...

There is a flag in MESS called GAME_COMPUTER_MODIFIED. I think this flag would represent unofficial, but yet very common models of known computers.
