the music in Skullfang is the exact same arrangement as in the OST... but made mono and downsampled to fit the crappy YMZ280 soundchip frown

The YMZ280 *could* be used to play very decent synth music - it's similar in capability (8 voices of PCM or ADPCM) to the SNES APU or Konami's K054539 (both of which were used alone to play excellent sound + music).

Apparently everyone got the same memo on it though, because I've yet to see a YMZ280 in an arcade game where the music wasn't a mono ADPCM stream. Even Konami's Bishi Bashi appears to do it.

Some games that use X1-010 does also sound like they are only looping some big samples... for example in Arbalester and Rezon.

On F3, the 3 chips are:

5505/OTIS - 32-voice synth
5701 - Glue chip / gate array. No audio functionality.
5510/ESP - programmable DSP, used for reverb effects in F3 games.
