(become root) # chmod a+rwx /dev/snd/* (back to normal user) Then try ALSA again. 0.7.6 is missing an error message for the case where it doesn't have permissions to access the sound hardware. (It may still not work anyway due to other problems - 0.7.7 will have an improved ALSA driver).
