I'm not sure how to make that simpler.

1) Undo the changes you made to the driver and compile
2) At the command prompt type mess snessfx -cart c:\roms\starfox.smc (or whatever the complete path to your cartridge is).
3) Game runs.

at a command prompt (i.e. in winxp, click 'start', click 'run...' and type cmd at the prompt)
do cd into the directory which mess is installed in
i.e. If you start in
C:\Documents and Settings\Your_Username>_
and mess is located in c:\mess
type 'cd c:\mess' (without the 's)
then type:
'mess snesfx -cart "path where cartridge file lives plus name"'
i.e if i have the cart images in c:\pokerom\snesroms and i want to run starfox.smc, then I would type:
'mess snesfx -cart "c:\pokerom\snesroms\starfox.smc"' (again without the ' chars) and then mess should run the cart correctly.

You don't understand. MESS doesn't work like MAME, the drivers can load arbitrary ROMs off your hard disk. You do not need to change the source to play your game ROMs, you simply specify them on the command line the way we've been telling you.

This is a general curiosity and not a critique ... but why exactly are you listing SNES + SuperFX as a separate machine, in this case, "snesfx"?

Given that the chips are inside the cartridges, doesn't it make more sense to auto-detect the special chips and use just the main "snes" driver?

You can't dynamically add CPUs yet as far as I know, so it's easier to do it this way.

Actually, right now it's just because the SuperFX chip runs all the time, resulting in massive slowdown on non-SFX games. This avoids that for now.
