Hi,

Sorry to bother you, but I couldn't find an answer in the FAQ.

I'm a TI graphing calculator collector (z80 and 68k).

Let's focus on the TI-81 calculator.

MESS in the only emulator supporting the TI-81.
(there is a way to run the TI-81 on other emulators, but it means patching the ROM to make the system behave like a TI-86... there are severall issues...)

MESS currently supports the TI-81 version 1.8K system.

Other system versions do exist: 1.0 1.1K 1.1 1.6K and V2.0V

I've just been sent the V2.0V ROM dump (it has been dumped for the 1st time just 1 week ago).

As no other emulator can run that ROM, I'd like to test it with MESS.

I've of course tried to replace in the ZIP file the 1.8K ROM by the V2.0V ROM, but of course it didn't work.
MESS says ROM is missing - I suppose MESS is using a list with the CRCs of the supported files.

So now, the question...

How can I do to make MESS accept that ROM, and so test if the dump seems ok ?

Thank you very much.

Either you change the rom definition in the source and recompile MESS or you can rename your new rom to the exact name of the one MESS wants (lets say "18.rom") and delete the original rom file. MESS will load the rom by name if it can't find a file with the right checksum.

Thank you Duke for your fast reply.

The original ti81.zip file contains a single file named ti81v18.bin

I've overwritten that file with my 2.0 ROM, so with the same file name.

But unfortunately, it didn't work...
MESS is displaying:
"The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game".

I've got MESS 0.127.
Should I try with a newer version?

Hi robbert,

I've renamed the 2.0 rom file to ti81v18k.bin in ti81.zip

Unfortunately, I'm getting the same error...
"The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or CHD images. Please select a different game".

What else can I try?...

I've sent a temporary link to you.

To test that ROM, please tell me what to download (and when to download it).

Thank you very much.

It looks like Curt has already added your new ROM to MESS. If you want to try the new version, you need to compile MESS. Instructions how to do this are here:

http://mess.redump.net/compiling_mess

Otherwise, wait either for Bobz MESS builds or for the next major release of MESS (could take a while).

Can you check your dump again, critor ?
Because the ROM is not working at all.
First screenshot: V2.0V, second screenshot: V1.8K

Hi!

It's been a long time, but I've gathered many informations.

The V2.0V TI-81 ROM dump is ok.

But...

The TI-81 motherboard was completly changed between 1.8K and V2.0V versions.

TI-81 with ROM V2.0V are using a motherboard which is based on the first TI-82.

Just have a look:

From left to right, there are:
- a TI-81 (1992) with ROM 1.8K
- a TI-81 (1994) with ROM V2.0V
- a TI-81 (1996) with ROM V2.0V
- a TI-82 (1994) with ROM 16.0

So, maybe the V2.0V TI-81 ROM dump could work with the TI-82 driver and some minor changes...

I'm currently dumping the TI-81 1.6K.
This time, the motherboard is similar.

So it may work.

I'll tell you as soon as I've got a correct 1.6K ROM file.

Thanks for helping me, and thanks for the screenshots.

Edit:

I've just tried my TI-81 V2.0V ROM dump on a TI-82 emulator (TilEm).

It's working!

It may depend on the emulator, but you just have to make your TI-81 V2.0V ROM look like a TI-82 ROM.

My trick was to concatenate 4 copies of the TI-81 V2.0V ROM.
So the size is correct (4x32=128Kb).

Depending on the emulator, it may read some informations with an offset from the beginning of the ROM file, and other informations (like the checksum) with an offset from the end of the ROM file. That's why I'm concatenating severall ROMs. In both cases, the information is present and readable.
