While I am (as are many others) thrilled to see the return of MAME OS X, I feel compelled to ask the following (without asking for a commitment) -

What is your intent in regards to a regular update schedule?

Would it be reasonable to expect updates with each 'Stable' release, or more (or less) often?

Again, I'm not looking to hold you to anything, or asking for any sort of commitment (I understand all too well about real life commitments coming first), but I am interested in your intentions regarding this project.

Probably towards the "less often" side, unfortunately. I got help for this version, and help will always make it move towards the "more often".

Enable Cheat is checked in Preferences, cheat.dat and cheat.zip are in ˜/Library/Application Support/MAME OS X folder and still nothing appears in the menu.

It changed in the 0.125-0.127 timeframe - so you'll need to get a new cheat package (which consists of XML per game files) at:
http://cheat.retrogames.com

The current package is for 0.134 or later. As for specific to OSX setup - someone else will need to help you there.

I haven't tried the cheat system. It's not disabled intentionally but if things changed, it may not work any more.

I downloaded cheat.zip from Pugsy's site, it's the last version, 0.134.
(Actually, the cheat.zip archive contains two readme files and the REAL cheat.zip to be copied in the MAME OS X folder, see above).
Unfotunately MAME OS X doesn't load cheats. (SDLMame does). Maybe an hard-coded file path?

I can confirm, this version of Mame OS X 0.135 Killer Instinct 1 (1.5d)& 2(1.4) is too slow to play.
I too can not get the cheat.zip (already unzipped the first .zip and left the cheat.zip file) and still Mame OS X doesn't read or allow cheat option even though its enabled in the preferences. Dave can these two things be fixed? Thanks

I just updated to .135 from .124, and MAME OSX seems to be looking for different ROM names than it was previously. Am I missing something? Did the MAME code base change game metadata?

Example: .135 thinks Cyberball 2 player Ver 1 is cyberbal2p1.zip, but the ROM file that loaded with .124 is called cyberb21.zip.

Is there a shortcut to fixing this?

This was a baseline MAME change. A large number of clones had expanded filenames to allow better identification and expanded detail in the setname. The previous 8 letter restriction was becoming very difficult to handle. Most people didn't notice because their auditing tool did the renaming for them.

Your best bet is to change them as you need them or find some sort of auditing tool to assist you.

Personally, I think it'd be nice if there were some sort of aliasing system such that you can define your own subtitute ROM names, and thus continue using the old names, but that'd be a bit much to ask. laugh

games which have supported save states should work perfectly with autosave (if not, it is a bug and it should be reported to MameTesters)

OTOH there is currently no way to tell which games had built-in NVRAM to save hi-scores...

Any plans on getting that re-enabled? Or is there a way I can re-enable it myself? Besides Killer Instinct, I can also confirm that Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike - Fight for the Future is running very slowly as well. (around 50% speed)

I started using Mame OS X the other day, for some reason all my games stopped showing up in the audited window. The Roms are still in the same directory. But none are listed anymore.

I am a Newbie, so the current one is the only one that I have used.... so... for some reason, I cant see any of the games that were audited in the play window.

I have tried to reaudit them, but to no help.... I thought maybe one of the roms may have messed with it.... I dont know if it did...

Just installed 0.135 last night. Got my fresh set of ROMs installed. The games I've tried all work well. One issue I'm running into though is that MAME crashes with a big crash report every time I quit. I don't even have to do anything - start MAME, quit, and within ten seconds or so, a big crash report comes up on the screen. Says:

Small question.

I'm rebuilding MAME OSX from scratch source and I'm getting a slew of build errors. Do I need the 10.4 dependencies? What other dependencies do I need to build this?

Thank goodness Apple's got Xcode on their site.

i wonder if there's a build time flag that can be set to properly rebuild MAME OSX with out having to downgrade Xcode?

If it needs something from 10.5.4 maybe you could install the 10.5.4 SDK from an older version of Xcode alongside your existing install?

I don't know if it will go down in flames though but if you're going to downgrade anyway maybe it's worth a try.

I have 3.2.1 installed here on Snow Leopard but I see the 10.5.4 SDK is installed when checking with System Profiler. Unfortunately I don't remember how it got there but I know it had something to do with compiling the SDL Library.

frown And I was about to grab the source and try and get up to date a bit too!

Ironically I only updated XCode last night. Although it was already on v3 anyway, just not the latest.

Hi,
I´m new to this place here, and I was and still am a little confused as to why my neo-geo roms suddently stopped working! smirk

I audited the games and I clicked on "Get Info", it tells me that the Audit Status is Bad! In every Rom I looked so far, it tells me that something is missing in the BIOS. So, I guess the reason why they aren´t working seems to be that the Bios is outdated ... even when I find a 0.135 Bios, where do I put it? There is no Folder for that ... . Sorry, if my english might be a lil broken! smirk
Is there even a exact Bios for 0.135 or can I use a version that is a lil older like 0.131 or so aswell? The Documentation sadly doesn´t tell me anything about where to put a newer Bios, I already checked! smirk
Since some here are actually working on the project, I´m sure you know better than me where something has to go! smirk

Quick question: for games that require a CHD, do you still put them in a subdirectory in the ROMS dir, or just put them in the Hard Disk Images directory?

My keyboard isn't working within games. I can't even enter OK to get past the initial Legal warning. I'm on a Mac mini (intel) running 10.6.2 and MAME OS X 0.135. I have the older Apple bluetooth keyboard. Is there an incompatibility with the bluetooth keyboard or is there some setting I need to change?

ok... ive been at this for days, scouring the net, googling everything
trying out everything i have read about....
Im using MAME OSX 0.135 on an iBOOK G4 OSX 10.4.11(power pc g4 1.1)
struggling to get Streetfighter 3 to work to little avail....
initially "missing files blah blah"
so i hunted and found
33s000.chd
cap-33s-2.chd
sf3000.chd
sf33usa.bin

tried again, no go.... then i downloaded all the versions of sf3 i could find
put the missing files in each of them, actually-each sf3 zip has all the diff version files in each.... and rezipped into the roms folder... (someone did this and it worked)
i put the chd files into the hard disk images file also, unzipped...
then i redirected mame to my roms folder..... as i saw someone do that
tried each of them again...no go

i saw something on youtube, the guy put the bin file zipped and japan no cd file zipped in the roms folder, as well as a reg folder with all the sf3 files unzipped
into the roms folder as well...
i also have the neogeo bios(though it might be an older one)
i found the hyper neogeo 64 bios, and uni-bios-23
maybe i need the japan no cd bios- not sure if thats the one included in the rom?
after all this i audited my roms, and nothing came up

i can now get streetfighter 3 to start,
"there are known problems with this game"
and initially with a "missing/incorrect rom" statement
tho i just tried again, and that didnt come up. but the known probs statement does, in a yellow window.....

the game runs, but its stuttering badly, running less than half speed
im guessing its a frames per second issue....
and another USA version opens at a Cps3 screen, and asks me if i want to rewrite the game, will take 70 mins...i dont know what that means so i havent tried...

i have also come across the mention of the need for NVRAM files, but i havent found much more info pertaining to that

i dont know if my problems are older ROM copies (ive tried to use newer releases)
i also noticed some of the files (10,20,30,31,40,41,50,51,60,61), in some ROM folders were 'document files', i made sure to have all 'unix executable files' instead, have no idea if that makes a diff?
or if its something that has been renamed by MAME in an update of ROM names?,
or if my computer not being Intel is an issue? it is a few years old...sigh*

also trying to play samurai showdown on MAME OSX- files missing log...
and the neo geo bios is recognized, but it says looking for: (this), but found: (that)
so i dont know how to fix that either.... as samurai showdown 2,3,and 4 work fine on MACMAME with the neogeo bios i have, but not on MAME OSX, although samurai showdown 5 is another issue, it doesnt show up on MACMAME, or MAME OSX.... but i havent fussed with those as much as streetfighter, so i dont know...
i still have to find all the missing files, and rezip all concerned again..yadda yadda.

at this point im considering trying out SDLMAME, or even a windows emulator, and run a windows MAME on that...!!! i wont give up though,
im still hoping to play Streetfighter 3 online, but i read u cant do that on MAME OSX, but on Windows MAME instead, with something called Kaillera... digging around through all this shows me i have ALOT to learn.

If the game is stuttering a lot it just means your computer is not powerful enough to run it at full speed. That's all there is to it. I also have the "game issues/not 100%" screen and yet I can run it at full speed (and even at 5 times the full speed by hitting F10).

Trying to run it on Windows Mame through a windows emulator will probably result only in even worse performance. Do I have to explain why?

About the "rewrite the game" message. There are basically two versions of this game, "with CD" and "without CD", the versions with CD require a chd (image of the CD) to run them in MAME and they will require to rewrite the game at FIRST BOOT ONLY. It takes a lot of time (as much as it takes in reality) but once it is done MAME creates a quite large NVRAM file which is basically a save, and once you have that NVRAM file you can run the game without rewriting the game anymore at boot time. The versions "with CD" and "without CD" don't have a noticeable difference in performance during gameplay.

Hi everybody-

I checked around google and in the FAQ but did not see my problem.

I'm running the latest MAME for OS X on 10.5.8 and it used to work just fine a few months ago, but for the past several months I can't get the application to open without it crashing.

I've tried reinstalling MAME several times with no improvements and last night tried different versions of MAME OS X in case it was a problem with .135 or something.

If it's helpful I can copy paste the crash report thing from when it crashes on here.

MAME OS X is no longer an active project. That said, usually when it crashed it was due to the presence of add-on audio hardware such as a ProTools or M-Audio setup. If you have anything of that nature, try disconnecting it and see if MAME OS X will start up.

The idea of compiling my own code, getting it to work with a "front-end" churns my stomach. Seriously this is Mac, it's supposed to be easy. smile

You don't need to compile (SDL) MAME when there's binaries right here: http://sdlmame.parodius.com/

However, I believe if for some reason you're still running a PPC Mac, you're SOL for getting pre-built binaries anywhere...
