The original Dragon Quest III - Soshite Densetsu (J) seems to work.

Yes of course, because this rom is not expanded (4mb). Rom expanded (and so rom more than 4mb) not supported in snes driver? (Tales of Phantasia, Star Ocean)

Star Ocean reaches the title screen with no problems (if you change the CPU clock as soon as emulation starts, so to avoid the sync problem that MESS still has) That's why I said that they are supported.
It might be that the patched rom is not recognized as exhirom by the loading routine. does the game work on bsnes?

After some time, I can finally announce that MESS does not crash anymore with large roms like Tales of Phantasia and the translation of DQ3.
moreover, I started to work a bit towards offset-per-tile and other improvements, but the road is still long...
Please report any regression which appears with the new code, so that it can be tracked down immediately. So far, I only found the menu text in Seiken Densetsu 3 (at character selection) has broken. I hope to be able to fix it soon...

The swinging pendulum is now missing from the Chrono Trigger title screen.

can you approximately track down when it broke? here, rev 7316 works like in 7250 (i.e. before my changes), hence I fear it has happened earlier...

Hmm, you're right. It seems to have broken some time between the 0.135 and 0.136 releases.
