Yes! No more pressing enter in vain, out of habit from over a decade of Mame32/UI use. Thanks for listening.

Overall, an impressive release!

A couple of minor things, though... Nit-Picking, as it were...

- The Command-Line Option still seems to be broken for me (it doesn't like folder names with spaces)

- The 'Quit' option appears to be missing from the Application menu (I can still quit via the dock...)

As it's a Mac program there should be a quit option. It's Mac and not Windows...

Place the M+GUI executable in your MAME folder, run it and set up the paths in the configuration menus. Then press F5 to refresh the gamelist.

He's on the PS3. The distributed M+GUI binary is for Intel. You see the problem.

So what frontend should I be looking at installing then (I seriously need to make a thread for this to be stickied once we've sorted this out - with the relevant kudos of course - so that the next person with a PS3 has an easy time of it heh).

Billb's repository contains an RPM of M+GUI 1.4.9e... may be that helps. Also, I'm sure he'll continue to update it for a while...

There are even more front ends that work on the PS3... QMC2 for instance (also in his repo):

I got that version of MGUI to install. The only thing is that when I try to run it, the following error message comes up: "Enlightenment was unable to run the following application

mamepgui

The Application failed to start"

Anyone got any ideas on what might be causing the issue (including where I need to manually link it to mame0.136)?

You're probably missing a dependent package or 3. Run it from the commandline and see what it says.

Hi, I'm having problems compiling this version of mamepgui. (I was able to get 1.4.9e running earlier.) I'm running ubuntu 9.10 x64. I've gotten mame and mess 0.137 compiled in preparation, and also downloaded/make/make installed qt 4.6 per the mamepgui compile instructions.

But here's the problem I'm having with 1.5.0 - after doing "lrelease mamepgui.pro" and "qmake", "make" fails with:

mamepgui_main.o: In function `global constructors keyed to CFG_PREFIX':
mamepgui_main.cpp:(.text+0xba3): undefined reference to `qt_plugin_instance_qico()'
mamepgui_main.cpp:(.text+0xbbd): undefined reference to `qt_plugin_instance_qjpeg()'
mameopt.o: In function `OptionUtils::updateSelectableItems(QString)':
mameopt.cpp:(.text+0xf17b): undefined reference to `SDL_GetNumVideoDisplays'
mameopt.cpp:(.text+0xf625): undefined reference to `SDL_SelectVideoDisplay'
mameopt.cpp:(.text+0xf62a): undefined reference to `SDL_GetNumDisplayModes'
mameopt.cpp:(.text+0xf733): undefined reference to `SDL_GetDisplayMode'
mameopt.cpp:(.text+0xf764): undefined reference to `SDL_PixelFormatEnumToMasks'
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [mamepgui] Error 1

Any hints? Thanks!

My issue looks similar to this one previously posted:

http://www.bannister.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=53103#Post53103

""lrelease mamepgui.pro && qmake && make" failed to link on my Ubuntu (9.04 amd64) due to jpeg and ico plugins.
I had previously installed libqt4-dev, qt4-qmake, and qt4-dev-tools.

I don't know how Qt build system works.
I commented the lines in "build_static" section in mamepgui.pro file :

#LIBS

build_static {

# QTPLUGIN += qico qjpeg

# DEFINES += USE_STATIC

}

And it seems to work now."

... however, LiuKahr's fix doesn't work for me.

If you build it yourself with disabled Phonon features it won't crash on exit either smile. It's really a Qt/Phonon bug as of Qt 4.6... haven't tried Qt 4.7 on Mac OS X yet.

Maybe I'll try that, thanks for the tip. Still in the process of getting used to qmc2.

Not the right place to post this but I promise it's a quickie:

qmc2 saves .ini files in the MESS root folder instead of the ini folder, is there anything I can do about that?

Nothing seems to happen when importing MESS64.ini and I can't find anywhere else to set the ini folder path.

I'm running the qmc2 executable from inside the MESS folder.

Hmmm, QMC2 does not manage ini files itself (except for the ini-exporter/importer). You may need to set the "inipath" in the global emulator settings, though!

OK, so you're really talking about the ini-exporter... yes, it uses the inipath setting or "." if it's unset.

Also, you may want to read this FAQ for more information about how QMC2 handles the emulator configuration.

Thanks.

MAME/MESS.ini has two ini paths set by default. The emulator somehow knows that it's supposed to read and write game/systemname.ini in the ini folder, and only read the main .ini in the root folder.

qmc2 doesn't make that distinction and just writes to the first inipath, which is the root folder.

Hmmm, I must admit that you've apparently found a bug... it SHOULD make this distinction and ask you to select the ini-path to use for the export if it includes multiple paths (as in the default case). But the default case is not correctly handled... I'll try to fix that for 0.2.b17!

UPDATE: fixed in SVN r2306.

To get things back on topic, FYI here's a script for Arch Linux that works as a guide for hassle-free compilation of MAME+GUI 1.5.0 on the latest Ubuntu (10.10) as well. I think the only dependencies are the qt and sdl dev library packages - no need to re-download all of qt, thank goodness.

Hope this helps...

Ok I havent compiled or really played a new mame on my mac since 0.138.

I remember well having to right click on the dock to close M+Gui before as this was the only way to do it..

I just finished setting up my new 0.142 install, and when I was done, I just clicked the red close button in the top corner of the window and the app closed down fine.
No crash report nothing, it appears it does quit..

M+GUI for Mac not showing NEOGEO roms in "Available Arcades"
Is it normal? neogeo.zip is in the rom folder and if I manually load from "All Arcades" it works! So what's wrong? THX!

I see all the NeoGeo games in MAME+GUI just fine. I'm running M.A.M.E. v0.143u2 (Jul 27 2011) 64bit and mamepgui-1.5.0.mac.universal-20100305

I sort the game list under the "driver" column and all the games show up under neodriver.c

I also checked the folder list and under "Driver" I see all the games in neodriver.c

Hope that helps. If not look under Options then Directories and PATHS to find your ROMs. Perhaps you moved your NeoGeo zip files into a separate folder?

neogeo.zip is in the ROMs folder!
Very strange... No NeoGeo games shows up.

For anyone on OS X who has M+GUI crashing after updating MAME:

Open a Terminal prompt, navigate to your MAME folder and type ./mame64 -cc (./mame -cc if you're on 32-bit OS X obviously) to update your mame.ini. Your existing settings will stay the way they are.

When doing this, you will see one of the weirdest error messages in the world:
"Illegal integer value for numprocessors: "auto"; reverting to auto"
Incidentally, this error message is apparently part of the reason why M+GUI crashes while populating the gamelist:
http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthread...ded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

In the Finder, click Go, Go to folder, type ~/.mamepgui and press return. Delete the cache folder and mamepgui.ini.
Move your mame.ini out of your mame folder.
Start M+GUI and point it to your mame binary as prompted. Once it's done populating the game list, quit.
Put back mame.ini and start M+GUI.

This way, if you had everything set in mame.ini already, you only have to set up the GUI part of M+GUI again.

isn't it enough to open mame.ini and change "numprocessor" from auto to 1?

:lightbulb: It might be possible to get around this issue entirely by opening mame.ini and setting the numprocessors value to the number of CPU cores you have.

I followed the instructions after MAMEPGUI crashed after an update but it does not work. It still crashes.

I removed all from .mamepgui, the prefs in the prefs folder, removed the mame.ini and tried the ./mame64 -cc but nothing helped. Still crashes.

By the way - any hopes that the great MAMEPGUI will be updated in future?

For this particular crash, all you need to do is set the numprocessors value in mame.ini so that it matches your number of CPU cores.
If that doesn't work, maybe you have some other issue.

It still crashes right after importing the new game list.

So I also set the numprocessors to 1, cleared the cache and removed the mamepgui.ini. Does not help at all.

I think an update of MAMEPGUI would be nice, I still miss the Cmd+Q option to quit.

I found the reason for crashing by myself: there was a mame.ini inside the folder where I keep all the MAME frontends (I keep them separately from MAME). No idea why MAMEPGUI creates a new one!? Nevertheless after deleting this mame.ini all is working fine now!

Why should we consider alternatives?? MAMEPGUI is just a great, the greatest!, frontend for MacOS X at the moment. All other frontends are missing some options. So an update would be nice...

Edit: There is only one thing MAMEPGUI can't do - it does not show the flyers because the .zip is 5.8 GB in size (official zip format does not support files more than 4GB). I know that I can unzip all files but I like to have all in one single zip file. Would be nice if a solution could be found for this problem...

Well, AFAIK M+GUI was abandoned, which means there will be no more updates. But I might be wrong, and/or someone else might pick it up and extend it from the current source... I don't want to give the impression that other front-ends are "better", but I know there are at least some (including my own) that are still actively developed.

A WinRAR is you. Sorry about the typo.

icons.zip still doesn't work with M+GUI. I really like M+GUI but it sure has weird bugs.

I really wonder if MAMEPGUI is dead or just paused...
