Yes. 400k and 800k floppies on the Mac use an ASIC version of Woz's original Disk II controller and GCR encoding (and in fact the low-level format's the same as 3.5" disks on the Apple II). The 1.44MB floppies are MFM and use a revised ASIC that contains both the Woz controller and a new MFM-capable controller (you can switch back and forth which of the two controllers is talking to the drive so 400/800k disks are still handled in Woz mode).

However, unlike every other MFM controller ever made, it still needs the CPU to babysit the drive cycle by cycle to do even basic reading/writing, just like the Woz controller. Unsurprisingly that's very, very hard to reverse-engineer (the BSD and Linux guys never managed it) and I'm finally close to understanding how it all works.

Still have a memory problem on MESS driver.
For testing on BasiliskII I need a .dat file with checksums for the supported (old) ROMs on MacMAME 0.28.

#9188 has improved Apple Sound Chip emulation which properly synthesizes the 4-tone boot chord on systems with an ASC. (You may verify the boot chord against e.g. MacTracker). FIFO mode is not working properly yet so e.g. the Sound control panel will still lock up the emulation, as will probably most apps which try to play sound. Working on that now.

ETA: shouldn't freeze now either, but definitely won't sound pleasant.

Doom probably wants to run in 256 color mode - have you tried that?

I've run it in 256 colors, when I took the screenshot
when you run it in any other color, it ask you to switch to 256
