I'm looking for help from an expert of the Cantab Jupiter (jupiter in mess). Although the driver is marked working, I've never got it to run anything (ace or tap file).

I know it sort of works, you can type in VLIST and it will print a list of words (it runs FORTH rather than Basic). But I have no idea what to type once an image is loaded.

So, is there an expert out there who knows about these things? If mess was working (i don't think it is now), what is supposed to happen?

Thanks,

Quick answer:

If you type in the Hello world code:

: HELLO ." Hello World!" ;

Then you've defined HELLO to return "Hello World", so just type HELLO at the prompt.

I would imagine that any file loaded from ace or tap file would contain a keyword to start the program, which should be shown as one of the first words, when you use VLIST (due to Forth's queue like syntax).

I haven't really touched Forth since the 80's so I might be wrong on some parts though....

Tape loading from the manual:

If you're not sure what programs are on the tape, rewind it to the beginning, type

LOAD

press ENTER and start the tape. The computer will eventually write up the names of all the programs.

after loading just type the name of the program:
IE Lunar Lander

load lunar
lunar

Some parts of programs may need to be loaded differently, with a word BLOAD. The instructions for the tape should tell you about this. The most usual form is
0 0 BLOAD name

Manual and stuff can be found here:

I made a modification to jupiter (not committed yet) to regain control after loading a ACE file.

I only have the tosec collection; it has no instructions.

Loading a ACE file, i typed in pacman but it says ERROR and freezes. Similar with others.

Loading a TAP file, should i type LOAD or BLOAD? It would usually say
Dict: some-name
followed by ERROR 10, or by OK, or by reaching the end of tape and freezing.
If i entered the name that followed Dict, no joy.

So I don't want to commit this change without some way of knowing if it works.

The jupiter driver is still not fully working.

Cassette
Only few games with very small size (~8xx byte) like Lunar Landing (.tap), Towers Of Hanoi (.tap) or Missle Man (.tap) can be loaded and are working.

Cartslot
The current driver is not able to load any ACE snapshots. In the past, it was possible to load few games like Pacman BUT they were not playable because of kb (interrupt ?) and may other problems.

See my postings in the past.

My suggestion was to change the driver status otherwise the people goes confused.
I also suggest to change the name for the device view (MESSUI) from cartslot to snapshot.

Thanks AnnaWu for the information.

I will work on this on Sunday (i'm away tomorrow), and the system status will be fixed - one way or the other.

Also thanks for your suggestions, they are good. smile

Last question: how did you load those working .tap files, and once loaded, how did you run them?

Example: Tower of Hanoi
If you are not know which name for the game you should load/start, check the dict: name which the tape driver found.

In this case, the name is hanoi.

Type: load hanoi

to load the tape

After loading/playing the tape

Type: hanoi

to start the game

The same procedure with the other games.

if ace files once loaded and now don't, we should not demote the system to not working, but make people aware of present bugs (with a bugzilla entry if not yet present)...

why can't we simply follow MAME on this? otherwise, we keep having systems which oscillate between working and not working states and then people would get *really* confused...

The snapshot software was never working because of the start problems.
Im sure, some other problems (kb interrupt, video display/gray scales, tape support (bigger/complexer software), ...) exist too since the beginning.
See my first posting about this topic.
The people are more confused if the driver is marked as working and 98% of the available software is non working for any reason.
For me ist the emulation status no more than imperfect but not good.
Some other driver with the non-working status have a better emulation and software support in my eyes.
Anyway, robbbert will take a look.

PS: I don't want to offend anyone smile
