With the new functionality that etabeta added today, couldn't one let's say pcecd create the list in such away that, if one need cd-rom system 1 the chd that needed it becomes a clone of that same with cdsys2 and cdsys3

thus it would look like this:
Code:
<software name="cfii" cloneof="cdsys">
	<description>Cosmic Fantasies 2 (JPN)</description>

a bug found in the messui. If one click on the pce driver in messui with all the software for the software list and a few chd's mess goes thru a long time to load the software, methinks it is connected with the newui that was added

For WinXP, you can get Japanese in consoles if you go to Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advanced tab, and set the region for non-Unicode applications to Japanese. It also changes \ to yen symbols (but operate the same as before), and may be irritating to some people. I usually have it set for Japanese since I use the occasional Japanese emulator, and I'd rather see Japanese that I don't understand than gibberish that I don't understand. smile

I always have that set too, but you still need some trickery to get the console to work since it only supports CP932 (Shift_JIS) and not Unicode:

I generally keep the console set to good old CP437 though, otherwise anything that uses box drawing characters doesn't work right.

@Haze: now that software lists support searching in the root rompath, adding multicart to pc10 or megatech is really just a matter of creating the xml and adding the 10 cartslot devices in the driver. see e.g. smssdips driver in sms.c for an example of 16 cartslots fully supported (even if only the cart1 game is loaded, I think due to preliminary emulation)

Well, you over-simplify it a bit, because in some cases the switching mechanism isn't documented (although in Megatech it should be because I did it with a hardcoded list ages ago)

Also if I was to multi-slot MVS then the decryption code and video handling would have to be updated to take into account which graphic regions to draw from and such ;-)

I get this while compiling the Latest SVN, but only if I use OSD=winui

Code:
make TARGET=mess OSD=winui
Compiling src/mess/video/pdp1.c...
src/mess/video/pdp1.c: In function 'void pdp1_draw_panel(running_machine*, bitmap_t*)':
src/mess/video/pdp1.c:306: internal compiler error: Segmentation fault
Please submit a full bug report,
with preprocessed source if appropriate.
See <http://gcc.gnu.org/bugs.html> for instructions.
make: *** [obj/winui/mess/mess/video/pdp1.o] Error 1

Compiles fine if I drop the OSD=winui

That's a well-known compiler bug on XP. It's fairly random what causes it - if you reboot and build winui again it'll likely succeed at that point. The real fix at this point is to upgrade to 7 though.

Rev. 10041: Added capability of mounting specific parts of a software element from Internal File Manager.

With this revision I have added the capability of loading specific parts of a software item in each device. Say you want to load disk 2 of the game albatros for FM7.
Then you have now two possiblities:

1. you can use the already supported command line option

mess fm7 -flop1 albatros:flop2

2. you can enter the Internal UI, select the File Manager, select the Floppy Drive you want, choose the software list and select Albatros. While until yesterday only the first disk would have been loaded, now you are prompted with a final submenu which displays the available disks you can mount. This should make easier to play some of the Japanese RPGs which require sometimes the 2nd of the 3rd disk to be mounted at start smile

==========

With this final addition, I seriously believe that all the basic functionalities have been finally added to software lists.

For sure more options can be added later to make easier changing disks or launching games with various devices required at start, but I think that now softlists are mature enough to be considered "officially supported" and not anymore a work in progress or a developer-only gamepark!!

Now I think I'll go back to improve some of the Nintendo xml lists wink
