sorry but it is not really an useful bug report. are you using MESS or MESSUI? Internal UI or newui? This is my experience with 64bit build (rev. 10046) under MacOSX.

Seems quite few bugs have come along recently.

- enter mess pce -cart 664
This produces 15 separate answerable messages before finally dropping back to the prompt. It should all be one big message.

- mess xeye
This does a few things then when the X heads toward you it drops back to the prompt. It used to give a little dump but no longer.

none of these can be reproduced on command line MESS for MacOSX. The first correctly offers system suggestions, the second offers cart name suggestions from the pce.xml list and the 3rd keeps giving prompt messages.

since you say 'boxes' I guess you refer to MESSUI, however prompt is correctly filled by comments under MacOSX

under MacOSX printf works like a charm. just tested.

EDIT: everything fine also in a 32bit (rev. 10054) under MacOSX.

@etabeta

I think what Robbbert is trying to say is that if one compiles mess with the OSD=winui layer, nothing gets printed to the command-line.

for example, the changes you made in rev. 10016, in mess(osd=winui) the output is diverted to a OK box

and keeps giving OK boxes, it doesn't show it in one big OK box, or print it to the commandline.

the same with any error that pops-up, it doesn't get printed on the command-line, the error just dissapear

I thought so, but Robbbert never explicitly said it in his post. Hence, I pointed out that command line works as expected. Being on MacOSX, I cannot test newui (or MESSUI).

Oh I thought you knew what system I use.

Win32XP with winui option.

The tests were done with command line. All output should be going to the console, not to message boxes. Message boxes should only be used in MESSUI, and all the text should be in one message box, not dozens of them.

I guess something got mixed up in the moving of newui to MESSUI build. possibly, mame_printfs (and/or printfs) are intercepted and sent to UI boxes. Only Micko could tell smile

Yes it is fixed, all the messages have reappeared.

When xeye crashes it now produces a proper access violation message again.
