Since the version 0.137 we released MESS packages without some tools like chdman, wimgtool and imgtool. Not know the reason.
Maybe we can add these tools again ?
Some "normal user" asked me how I can create/convert a image and where I get the tool(s) ?

Ok, the user can compile MESS respectively the SVN build to get the tools but as "normal user" ?
OK, the user can download older MESS packages with tools but are the tools up-to-date ?
OK, the user can download additional the MAME package but some MESS specific tools are missing, right ?
OK, I or someone else can upload the tools anywhere but is it not better to prevent this ?

PS: Bobz daily builds also not content any tools.

I Agree with that. For those who are following the project more closely it sounds pedestrian but for new users or those who aren't following the project for a couple of months (me included :)) it's difficult to mount new hd images or port old chd images without those tools.

The links provided above by Kaylee are already dead and I can't find the latest chdman or winimage to fix my old files for current drivers. Please, include those tools in the official 'full' releases, since they're part of this project in some way.

Didn't bobz add them recently? I think it was even at my request.

considering 90% of people wouldn't even use all those files it would be a waste of bandwidth to include them in full releases or even u releases.

It's only but a few steps to compile MESS which will generate these files.

anyway, here are those tools from u3 source compile

Firewave is right. Bobz daily builds contains all tools now.

Of course, how can a normal user know these tools exist or not ?
So itīs not really public for everybody.
But this can be changed (in the future) when frontends like QMC2 will support these tools or at least part of it.
Especially if the handling will be simplified by using a GUI.

All tools compressed is peanuts compared with the other files.

Indeed. And I'd suggest a separate compressed download file for those tools only. If an user wants to try drivers that require HD images to run, they would have the option to download only the latest tools package (updated when needed). It doesn't have to be included within the main MESS distribution zipfile. As like Anna said, the size of all tools compressed is peanuts. It lets the MESS site more 'user friendly' to normal/moderate/unfamiliar users.

I agree with that and it's a good idea to include them.

I just meant if users couldn't complete the easy task of compiling MESS for themselves, then how can they even be expected to use the tools correctly or know what they do.
