To head off the obvious questions, I don't know when 1.2 will be yet and I don't know what the license will be, but GPL is likely.

The soul calibre rom...put me out of my misery...Its never going to happen right?...even with this great news

If it goes open source can some one make this rom work.....they did it with Killer instinct

This is meaningless for Soul Calibur - anyone inclined to fix it could've done so in MAME (which has much nicer debugging tools). Your Killer Instinct remark is a non-sequiter. Only Aaron emulated it properly.

You should have noticed that Zinc is going to be released (most probably) on GPL, making it imposible to cut/paste any meaningful code into mame.

Also, MAME has a DRC framework and it's nothing like how ZiNc's recompiler works. Plus, making frankenmames makes me and smf very unhappy.
