I know that Curt has done a heck of a lot of work on the c64 drivers recently so I thought I'd fire up a homebrew game and test it out.

The game in question is called Metal Warrior 4 (found here)

I've tried the following on both the NTSC and PAL c64 drivers

Code:
LOAD ":*",8,1
RUN

This will load a menu that has the following two options:

LOAD THE GAME
VIEW INSTRUCTIONS

If I select either of the two options the system resets.

EDIT: It appears to be related to the FAST LOADER option?

EDIT2: I can get into the main game by turning the FAST LOADER option to OFF but the c64 joystick is unresponsive to my inputs (gamepad)

The 1541 emulation is quite simple, it does not support many fast loaders. I haven't done any improvements on it since I first wrote it since it needs cycle exact VIA/CIA first to make the advanced protections/loaders work.

Joystick should work though, need to investigate.

For an interesting story on C64 fastloaders (and to get an idea on why correctly emulating them is so hard) I recommend this

Cool article, thanks for sharing.
It's amazing what can be done in such a small space.
I found this in the comments section, two reverse engineering stories from Thomas Tempelmann:

(scroll down)

Love the slot machine hacking story...just picture him in a car outside the pub with the Sharp palmtop, cash register printer and 68000 breadboard waiting for the numbers..great stuff.

The guy behind pagetable.com (Michael Steil) does a lot of C64 hacking, and gives presentations on every year's CCC.

Other interesting posts on how to predict the number of C64s sold from looking at serial numbers, how to waste an exact number of clock cycles, and his Ultimate C64 talk from 25C3

The slot machine hacking story is indeed cool smile
