Hey guys,

We'd like to make a list of binary packages of SDLMAME/MESS for various Linux distros, *BSDs, etc, etc and post it on mamedev.org. Could all of you packager types please reply to this post and give the URLs and any interesting details? (If you're not a packager but you know the answer for your favorite distro, also feel free to post!)

Thanks!

Great idea! I'm not a MAME or MESS packager, but some distro- or community-packages I know of are:

Arch Linux:
MAME (Arch Linux Community builds)

Slackware:
MAME MESS (slackbuilbs.org, there are more, I'm sure -- doesn't Cyberzino Punk build a package as well?)

openSUSE:
MAME (PackMan)

Ubuntu:
MAME (MESS in the furure, perhaps) (wallyweek's repo)

Debian:
MAME MESS (debian.org)

Fedora:
MAME and MESS (rpmfusion.org, non-free repo -- instructions)

MAME (that's Cyberzhino Punk's package smile )

Great! So there's not currently a MESS package for Ubuntu? Does the Debian one work? I've heard not, but maybe there's a special trick? smile

Also, I collected a few OS-icons for QMC2's download page... you can get them here, in case you want to use them: http://qmc2.arcadehits.net/images/logos/

I just asked wallyweek a few weeks ago... as far as I understood him, he wants to do it in the not so far future... but I don't want to push him, so he should answer himself wink.

I have no idea... probably just a question of dependencies / package-names / library-versions?

Yellow Dog Linux:
MAME and MESS (billb's ps3bodega-repo -- last available MAME/MESS version is 0.140/0.139, YDL 6.2 comes with a meanwhile "ancient" tool-chain, even Qt 4.7+ can't be built cleanly -- instructions)

Ubuntu Natty: Building a mess package from debian

Get

mess_0.144-1.dsc
mess_0.144.orig.tar.xz
mess_0.144-1.debian.tar.xz

from http://packages.debian.org/sid/mess

Code:
dpkg-source -x mess_0.144-1.dsc
cd mess_0.144
debuild
gdebi-gtk ../mess-data_0.144-1_all.deb
gdebi-gtk ../mess_0.144-1_amd64.deb

And finally

Code:
mess -rp /mnt/mame/romlib/xmess/bios/ apple2

Package naming and executable naming amongst the pagages in the list is inconsistent. mess/sdlmess and mame/sdlmame.

But for building a mess ubuntu package this should be a starting point.

Gentoo Linux:
MAME MESS (Gentoo Portage Overlays -- MAME is currently at 0.144, MESS at 0.141, I'm not sure if the 'sdlmess-9999' package refers to "MESS SVN", but it seems as if given the file dates and the 'package rules')
