Hi guys. I am just curious. How does Amiga emulation in MESS measure up to WinUAE in terms of the following:

A)speed
B)accuracy
C)compatibility

.....? Has MESS Amiga emulation improved in the last 6 months?

The developers of MESS have my sincere gratitude. Thank you guys.

A) FAIL
B) FAIL
C) FAIL

No.

There is no maintainer for the Amiga emulation at this time, so it's getting no lovin'.

I'm actually being a little excessively negative - most A500 software/games/demos do run, often correctly even. But you don't want to compare the entire Amiga line vs. WinUAE, that's not a winning battle.

I think the only area where MESS is ahead of WinUAE is the 68030 MMU emulation, which WinUAE still lacks AFAIK

I could be wrong though, didn't play with Amiga emulation recently

MESS doesn't boot any 68030-based Amigas so it's irrelevant. (Also WinUAE has full MMU emulation if you change it to use the slowest CPU core).

We are far, far ahead of the field of 680x0 Mac emulators on MMU support however smile

Very informative guys thanks. If given the choice, I would prefer to use MESS to play all my Amiga games. Reasons are as follows:

1)Easier and more friendly user interface.

2)Input recording and playback.

3)Netplay with spectating, via MAMEHub/MessHub. Though this is supposedly being worked on in a WinUAE derivative called FS-UAE.

4)Support for HLSL which means better looking image quality and awesome graphical filters.

5)Bunch of other stuff....

MESS is simply the bomb. Period. The features, customization and ease of use is second to none. WinUAE can be a pain in the ass to setup sometimes. But since Amiga emulation is much better in WiNUAE its current state, I guess I'll stick with that. smirk

The developers of MESS have my sincere gratitude. Thank you guys.

Hmm? The WinUAE interface is very good, and powerful.. it's ideal for something like the Amiga which demands near infinite flexibility and system reconfigurability within a GUI, whereas the MESS interface really isn't. The only situation in which the MESS GUI is really better is TVs, cabinets and the like otherwise it's too rigid, too 'single fullscreen thing displayed' (similar reasons to why people are saying Metro sucks on a PC)

The real interesting point for MESS and Amiga would be the PPC accelerator cards. Last I heard (which was admittedly about 5 years ago) the WinUAE guys have completely ruled out emulating the PPC cards as a bridge too far and rather pointless, despite there being a number of games and demos capable of taking advantage of them. Of course performance wouldn't be great* but it would be a technical checkbox ticked. That's really where the strength of MESS is, a lot of the extra hardware you could plug into these systems has already been emulated for something else.

*it already isn't compared to WinUAE which has VERY good performance considering the level of accuracy and the chips it emulates and outperforms MESS even when emulating a 68060 vs. the 68000

Nitpick: if you configure WinUAE for the max-accuracy 680x0 with MMU, it gets much, much slower since they can't DRC it.

And yes, the WinUAE GUI is atrocious for people who are unfamiliar with the real Amiga and simply want to play games. MESS's software lists work much better in that situation.
