When no style-sheet has been set, QMC2 follows the "GUI style", which is what it's supposed to do ... Note that I haven't tested the style-sheets I made for QMC2 "since ages". They may need some updates, but should mostly work. In other news... support for the new "MESS category.ini" from ASH should soon be available, I'm currently testing, testing, testing .

When no style-sheet has been set, QMC2 follows the "GUI style", which is what it's supposed to do ... It can do what ever it wants. My question was how to change the "GUI style" to suit my personal taste... which Anna Wu has graciously already answered for me. You have an outstanding GUI. I like its many features. I especially like the web surfing capabilities, and mp3 player.

SVN r3983 now has support for ASH's new MESS category.ini (I've added the [brackets] for the category-descriptions in this version and revised the 3 category names, but changed nothing else -- the data is not final in any way!). So, now we support catver.ini for MAME, category.ini for MESS and merged catver.ini / category.ini for UME !

Note that there's no fallback to the parent set's category yet. I figure that category.ini doesn't contain child sets, in contrast to catver.ini, which is OK; I need to "fill the gaps" with the parent categories, if applicable. This just hasn't been done yet.
EDIT: hmmm, no, that doesn't work... or better, it would be too complicated to make this work, because the hierarchy information is gathered at a later step (at which the category info already has to be available).
EDIT2: I actually think I was wrong and category.ini ought to contain parents AND clones, it's just not complete yet (ASH ?!).

No markers for clones, everything is alright the way it's now (see my version of the category.ini download above). I was just unsure in the first place, because some (!) sets weren't included in your category.ini. But there are clones, so it's probably just that we're using different versions of MESS.

OK no problem
The [Personal Computers] has been added (not by me) and is just in the middle of the [computers] list so anything after 'P' is now classed as a personal computer???
