Great news. A MAMEdev (not Aaron or Nicola) has broken the ZN encryption using some specialized hardware. This means that potentially all ZN games (including previously unsupportable ones like Raystorm or NBA Jam Extreme) could be supported now. However, for each individual game we need a dump from it's encryption chip (there is 2048 bytes of "key data" necessary to "turn the lock"). Guru has set up a status page showing what keys are dumped and which ones we'll probably still need PCBs for. If you have any of the missing PCBs and can send 'em off for a bit, please either post here or contact Guru directly.

Guru\'s ZN status list .

In addition to what's shown there, we also have a Psychic Force and a Heaven's Gate in "safe hands".

Cool! that's good news! Raystorm is a pretty sweet shooter, it would be great to see it emulated in mame and zinc :shiver:

Do the Namco boards have the encryption chip also, and just don't make use of it, or is the chip absent from the board?

Namco boards are not ZN-based, nor are Konami boards.

Yup. ZN is a universal PS1 motherboard that Sony sold to companies that were too cheap or otherwise unwilling/unable to build a full custom solution (a lot of ZN games do have some sort of custom hardware on the ROM board, but e.g. Sonic Wings Limited and most of the Tecmo games are "bare ZN").

dat files are not happening. Clearly this dumping will influence the final release, but at the same time The_Author's wanted ZiNc dead and out of everyone's hair since last August so I figure we shouldn't dawdle too much more ;-)

Does this mean that we can now have Street Fighter EX series in MAME?
If so, good smile

OMFG! :p Does this mean Simpsons Bowling will finally be out? I know. This had nothing to do with ZN games but neither did the post above. laugh
