I'll load MESS so it shows me my list of avail systems.
when I pick Genesis I get...
The selected game is missing one or more required ROM or CHD Images. Please select a different game.
Press Any Key...
Now. Currently in the Roms folder I have a Genesis Rom/BIOS that is supposed to not be Neccisary as you have said. But if I remove this fake ROM/BIOS and restart MESS the Genesis option dissapears from the Menu...

mess genesis -cart sonic

genesis.ini

rompath roms;megadriv

or without the cart command line. Just run the mess genesis command. Put your game name here.

cartridge sonic

Windows 10 Pro 64-bit / Intel Core i5-4460 3.20 GHz / 8.00 GB RAM / AMD Radeon R9 200 Series

If you do "mess genesis sonic", you have to have your ROM's setup according to the softlist, kind of like a MAME ROM setup.

If you do "mess genesis -cart c:\roms\sonic.bin" it will launch the file directly.

The MESS setup for ROMs and stuff is identical on Linux and Windows. If you have it running on Windows, pointing it to the ROMs folders etc on your Windows drive will just work, assuming matching MESS versions on the two OSes. I use the same ROM folders for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X on my LAN and it works great.

You need instead to do mess genesis -cart /path/to/lionking.bin. "lionking" by itself assumes you have the MESS softlist ROMs, which you obviously don't.

This would break the same way on Windows if you attempted it, for the record.

Like RB said, that's the softlist version. It goes in mess/roms/megadriv

MESS softlist uses the files split into their original setup on the cartridge, so if you just have a combined lionking.bin or whatever, it won't work unless you specify that file directly. To make it softlist compatible you have to split the file into 2 parts.

And for what it's worth, it sounds like CLRMAME will work through Wine, but I've never tried it.
