Maybe just append .zip without the parens?

I was also thinking, especially with the future rom unmerging, you could have a command line option that lists all the zips required by a system, ex. ./mess64 -requiredzips apple2p, would print out "apple2p.zip, d2fdc.zip" etc

Keep in mind, MAME can handle zip and 7z compressed files, open folders or any combination. Hard-coding ".zip" would be inaccurate. You already have a command which shows what you need called -listcrc which shows the crc, rom filename, setname and description MAME expects to find the file in normal use.

Code:
c:\mamesvn\trunk>mess64 -listcrc apple2p
64f415c6 341-0036.chr apple2p Apple ][+
