Because the people doing the dumping are rarely the people with the ability to actually hook them up in a driver and test them?

Also, non-power-of-two dumps can be used to get a driver going; people are generally more likely to get you un-soldered flash chips when they know it's gonna contribute to emulation.

I've seen quite a lot of people consider the non-power of 2 roms to be more correct than what we have anyway, because they're what gets programmed into the chips in many cases, with the rest of the rom not even being cleared (so thus could contain random data in the actual chips.. This is especially true of flash based ones where you don't have to erase the entire rom first.

(also flash dumps containing the extra error correction data, which some systems need / use for general purpose storage also won't be power of 2, see the cv1k flash roms for example)

Climber has now been dumped and scanned:
[Linked Image]

The game is based on the SM511 which has a separate melody ROM. I've got help from Sean with ideas and examples on how to try to dump the melody ROM electronically. For this game, the melody ROM was dumped in two different ways to properly identify the tones and lengths. Then the program ROM has been used to determine where the stop bits are most likely to be found. To verify the ROM I wrote a very simple melody ROM player and also tested that the melodies sound good in the game. However, as for now, a decap will be needed to be sure that the melody ROM is 100% accurate.

The game overlay has been scanned and can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/kkgf101f9ljlb41/AAAh3lW0jMZ0ykHqz4AQtgkYa?dl=0

Have you marked the melody ROM as BAD_DUMP in MAME so we know it needs a redump?

Thanks, that's a good suggestion smile I wasn't aware of this before. Have just added a pull request that marks the melody ROM as a BAD_DUMP.
