ah, very nice.. wasn't obvious from any of the posts, I hope hap mirrors it because the link most people have at the moment is hap's link, and this will end up being missed by a lot of people..

Is there a version of those without that "double image" shadow effect?

Turn off the backdrop element in the in-game video/art menu.

They're baked into the PNGs.

His artwork, means his design choice.
Besides, hydef isn't here, ask him on MAMEWorld.

Hello. Firstly, thanks for all the support and promotion in these artworks.

It wouldn't have been possible without many of you.

They're probably not going to be to everyone's taste but if a few people like them, great! I made them this way 'cause I wasn't satisfied there were enough high quality photos out there to use, so I started with a nice image and converted it to make some other games in the series. Some units are were initially made in Illustrator but then finished in Photoshop because I find Illy's a pain to do everything.

And they're not actually high def as the name suggests, it's just a name I chose.. So they're not going to be totally future-proof or the best way to preserve them. I just thought this way was good for now and sorta easier to release something if you just have to change a few things.

The backgrounds I can release without the shadow layer if you like? They're basically what you've done with your cleanups, ICEKnight (which I've used sometimes) and just stuck a gradient or levels adjustment on top. Sometimes changed the hue. But they're nothing you couldn't do or maybe better. I find the screens still aren't ever like the real thing even with these adjustments added but I'm not sure what else to do with them or what can be done.

First of all, thank you for your great work, these artworks you made look really amazing.

I do think it would be cool if you could also release a "no shadow" version but, of course, only if it's not too much of a hassle for you.
