I run MAME on a laptop with a big external display connected so I have all the screen space to play with the artwork activated.
But when I'm out of home and I play using the internal lid I had to turn off artwork because they are reducing too much the game area.
As MAME remember the last setting per ROM, I had to open menu, going to "Video Options" and change it every time.

Could you tell me if there's a way (or a shortcut) to toggle between the available video modes or to turn on/off artwork without opening menu?

These are the artwork command line options, don't know if there's something that suits your needs: https://docs.mamedev.org/commandline/commandline-index.html?highlight=artwork#core-artwork-options

Thanks a lot Osso,
for the moment, I solved creating 2 different launching script (I'm using SDLMAME):
one that contains: ./mame64 -nouse_bezels
an another with: ./mame64 -use_bezels

so I can use the fist one when I'm on the laptop, and the second one when the external display is connected.
This could be a good solution (it works over all the games, so it's perfect),
but I still think adding the feature to toggle between the artwork options, like you can do with slider controls, could be a good improvement.

You can turn bezels on and off live in the Tab menu under Video Options.

Yes I know the tab menu way is there, but it's not so practical.
I was just proposing to add a setting that can be applied to all the games under "Configure Option" menu before to launch any rom, or to add a shortcut to toggle between different artwork configurations that can be used during gameplay.
Something similar to what is already possible with the filters or the sliders.

From my point of view, I'm happy with the solution I found and I wrote during the previous post,
but I was just thinking that adding this adding the feature could be convenient and useful to improve the MAME user experience.

An even better solution may be always keeping bezels in use and instead:
a script that contains: ./mame64 -artwork_crop
and another with: ./mame64 -noartwork_crop

With "-artwork_crop", priority is given first to maximize screen space for the game itself to fill in properly, then add artwork accordingly. Typically, on a widescreen display, the top and bottom of the bezel is cropped, while part of the bezel's sides will still be present.

Utilizing "-noartwork_crop", priority is given first to display fully whatever artwork options are turned on and available (I.E. Entire bezel will show), then fill the game into the remaining area.

Thanks a lot Trebor!
That's a better solution.
