There is a possibility of resurrecting it! Optical dump the dead/ESD'd VSM, and use a pic-based VSMulator to replace it in vsm address space. I'm 99% sure it will work then.

You are also assuming the MCU will work after decap, or that I will be able to live dump it!
Well, I'm assuming the first thing we'd do is decap the dead VSM, optically dump it, and hack up a VSMulator PIC on a tiny daughterboard in place of the dead VSM. That way the speak and spell should actually work, unless the MCU is also damaged.
Once that is done, we can try electrically dumping the MCU, or live-decapping it.
