Well, I'm a user, not a developer, so compiling the source is no option for me (and certainly many others, too).
Nonsense. A significant number of users have learned to compile MAME and MESS just fine - it's arguably easier now than actually using the emulator ;-)

That and if you do convince someone like that to try MESS again they consider their prejudices confirmed at the first sign of any glitch or incompatibility.
