As I said, the change to writeconfig defaulting to 0 may be related to my (and others') complaints that mess should not treat media selections like inserted floppies or cartridges as some permanent change (as e.g. dip switch settings).

When starting on the command line, I want to be sure that "./mess" or "mess.exe" starts up cleanly, because if I wanted a mounted cartridge, I'd say so by using "-cart".

IMHO pre-mounting should be a concern of a front-end, not of the emulator itself.
