Basically most 1996-1997 games work. E.g. Japanese versions of Puzzle Fighter and Breath of Fire 3 work perfectly, so do games like Ranma 1/2 or Bastard!!
As Arbee explained once in the shoutbox it's the input library used for Dual Shock games to be much pickier with timing and to cause unresponsive controls in MESS. Hence, most later games have control issues
