Let me explain the principle on the hand of the mc1000 driver.
On this driver the tape function is working.

1.) Start the mc1000 emulation
2.) Create a new Cassette image (menu > file manager > cassette > create), example: test.wav
3.) Type now following:
4.) 2 PRINT "Test"
5.) Press Return
6.) Type now following:
7.) SAVE
8.) Press Return
8.) Choose "Record" (menu > tape control)
9.) If the cursor is back and blinking
10.) Choose stop (menu > tape control)
11.) Hardreset
12.) Type now following:
13.) LOAD
14.) Choose "Play" (menu > tape control)
15.) Type now following:
16.) RUN
